Around 4,000 public health workers employed by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) are set to benefit from a wage revision that includes a minimum monthly salary of ₹18,000 along with dearness allowance (DA).

The announcement was made by Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta at an event on Friday. According to a PTI report, the revised pay structure is expected to cost the exchequer approximately ₹52 crore.

The decision follows demands for better pay and recognition for workers who have continued to support public health services across the capital for several years.

MCD Workers to Receive Minimum Salary of ₹18,000 Plus DA

Under the revised arrangement, eligible employees will receive a basic monthly salary of ₹18,000, corresponding to the minimum of Level 1 in the pay matrix, along with variable dearness allowance.

The workers were initially appointed as Domestic Breeding Checker (DBC) staff to help control dengue. They were later redesignated as Multi-Tasking Staff (Public Health) and continued to carry out public health responsibilities, including door-to-door visits.

MCD Commissioner Sanjeev Khirwar said the employees had continued performing these duties over the years.

Mayor Pravesh Wahi stated that the revised wages had been transferred directly to the workers’ bank accounts. The decision follows the principle of equal pay for equal work.

Delhi Government Recognises Long-Serving Public Health Employees

Mayor Pravesh Wahi said the proposal to increase wages and provide DA had been announced in the previous budget before being submitted to the chief minister for approval.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the decision recognises the contribution of employees who have spent decades working in public health services. She also emphasised the government’s responsibility to support the welfare of those serving the city.

According to a statement issued by the mayor’s office, Gupta said the government had a duty to look after thousands of employees who provide essential services to Delhi.

The wage revision is expected to provide financial support to the affected workers while acknowledging their continued contribution to public health operations.

MCD Plans to Recruit 2,500 Sanitation Workers

Alongside the wage revision, the MCD has announced plans to recruit 2,500 sanitation workers ahead of Diwali. The recruitment is intended to strengthen cleanliness efforts across Delhi, including in busy markets.

The move comes as the civic body faces concerns about garbage accumulation and delays in waste collection in several parts of the capital.

Earlier, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta directed the MCD to organise night-time cleaning drives in major markets and residential colonies. The aim is to improve sanitation during the festive season, when markets and public areas typically experience increased footfall.

Gupta has also made it clear that negligence in sanitation will not be tolerated, instructing civic officials to ensure that cleanliness improvements are visible on the ground.
