The State Bank of India (SBI) has highlighted the importance of online banking security as digital payments and internet banking become increasingly common. Customers are being advised to remain alert to suspicious calls, text messages, WhatsApp messages and emails that could be attempts to steal their personal or banking information.

Account holders should carefully verify any communication claiming to come from SBI, particularly messages asking them to update e-KYC, warning that their accounts will be closed or promising rewards. Customers should check the bank’s official website before trusting such communications or following any instructions.

SBI Customer Data Incident: What Has Been Reported?

According to reports, SBI disclosed a customer data exposure in October. An initial investigation examined approximately 375,000 records, of which around 3,897 reportedly contained personal customer information.

The information included customers’ names, dates of birth, mobile numbers, residential addresses and email addresses.

The bank stated that customer funds remained secure and that the incident had not disrupted banking operations. Customers should rely on official SBI communications for verified updates and guidance regarding the incident.

SBI Advises Customers Not to Share Banking Credentials

SBI customers should never disclose sensitive banking information to anyone, even if the person claims to represent a bank employee or an official organisation.

Important details that must remain confidential include:

  • One-Time Passwords (OTPs)
  • ATM or debit card PINs
  • UPI PINs
  • Internet banking passwords

Sharing these details can put a bank account at risk of unauthorised access or fraudulent transactions. Customers should also avoid clicking on unfamiliar links received through SMS, WhatsApp or email.

Messages that create urgency, threaten account closure or demand immediate e-KYC updates should be verified through official banking channels before any action is taken.

How SBI Customers Can Protect Their Accounts

Regularly checking bank statements and transaction histories can help customers identify suspicious activity at an early stage. If an unfamiliar transaction appears, customers should report it promptly through the bank’s official channels.

Anyone who suspects an attempted banking fraud should contact SBI using the contact details listed on its official website. Avoid relying on phone numbers or links provided in suspicious messages.

Customers can also report suspected financial cyber fraud by calling India’s national cybercrime helpline at 1930. Reporting the incident as soon as possible can help initiate the appropriate response.

Remaining cautious with personal information, verifying bank communications and monitoring account activity are important steps in protecting money from online fraud.
