Central government employees are awaiting the next dearness allowance (DA) revision scheduled for July 2026. Based on the available estimates, DA could increase by 3 to 4 percentage points, rising from the existing 60% to either 63% or 64%. The final rate will depend on the relevant inflation data and the government’s official decision.
A change in DA can also affect the transport allowance received by eligible employees under the 7th Pay Commission. Since DA is calculated on the applicable basic transport allowance, an increase in the DA rate raises the additional amount paid along with it.
How Is the July 2026 DA Hike Calculated?
The All India Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers (AICPI-IW), published by the Ministry of Labour and Employment, is an important indicator used in calculating DA for central government employees.
The 12-month index data relevant to the July 2026 revision forms the basis of the estimates for the next increase. If DA rises from 60% to 63%, the increase will be 3 percentage points. If it reaches 64%, the increase will be 4 percentage points.
These figures remain projections until the government officially announces the revised DA rate.
Transport Allowance Under the 7th Pay Commission
The transport allowance paid to central government employees depends on their pay level and the city category in which they are posted. Employees posted in Class X cities receive a higher basic transport allowance than those in other designated cities, including Class Y and Class Z locations.
The applicable DA rate is also added to the basic transport allowance. Therefore, when DA increases, the DA-linked component of transport allowance rises as well.
For employees in Pay Level 9 and above, the current basic transport allowance is ₹7,200 per month in Class X cities and ₹3,600 per month in other designated cities.
At a DA rate of 60%, the additional amount linked to transport allowance is ₹4,320 in Class X cities and ₹2,160 in other cities.
How Much More Could Employees Receive?
The potential change in monthly transport allowance for employees in Pay Level 9 and above can be calculated using the basic rates provided.
If DA increases to 63%:
- Class X cities: The DA-linked component would rise to ₹4,536 per month, an increase of ₹216.
- Other designated cities: The amount would reach ₹2,268 per month, an increase of ₹108.
If DA increases to 64%:
- Class X cities: The DA-linked component would become ₹4,608 per month, an increase of ₹288.
- Other designated cities: The amount would reach ₹2,304 per month, an increase of ₹144.
These calculations show the additional monthly benefit compared with the current 60% DA rate. The figures relate to the DA component of transport allowance, not the total allowance.
When Will the New DA Rate Be Confirmed?
The July 2026 DA revision will be confirmed through an official government announcement. Until then, the proposed 63% or 64% rate should be treated as an estimate rather than a confirmed increase.
Central government employees should follow official notifications for the final DA rate and the applicable payment details.
