The highly anticipated sequel to Kalki 2898 AD is moving towards its next major stage, with director Nag Ashwin revealing that regular shooting for Kalki 2 is expected to begin in mid-October 2026.
In a recent conversation with Variety India, Ashwin said the call sheets for the principal cast have been arranged. He also revealed that some standalone scenes featuring Amitabh Bachchan and Kamal Haasan have already been shot, while the team was awaiting Prabhas’ availability for the main schedule.
According to the filmmaker, filming is expected to continue until around the middle of 2027. The release date will be discussed after the shoot is completed and the post-production requirements become clearer.
Nag Ashwin Hints at a 2028 Release
Although the makers have not announced an official release date, Nag Ashwin indicated that the team is hoping to bring the sequel to theatres in 2028.
His comments suggest that the production team wants to complete the large-scale shoot before finalising a theatrical release schedule. Once filming ends, post-production will also be a key part of the process given the scale of the project.
For now, the immediate focus is on beginning principal photography in October and completing the shoot by around mid-2027.
Kalki 2898 AD Wins Two National Awards
The sequel update comes after Kalki 2898 AD received two honours at the 72nd National Film Awards.
The film won Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment, while production designer Nitin Zihani Choudhary was recognised with the award for Best Production Design.
Reacting to the recognition, Nag Ashwin said he was honoured by the awards and spoke about the film’s effort to combine science-fiction elements with Indian cultural influences while appealing to a wide audience.
Released in June 2024, Kalki 2898 AD starred Prabhas, Amitabh Bachchan, Kamal Haasan and Deepika Padukone in key roles. The film went on to achieve major success at the worldwide box office and concluded with several storylines and questions that are expected to continue in the sequel.
Deepika Padukone’s Return Remains a Talking Point
Deepika Padukone’s involvement in Kalki 2 has also remained a subject of discussion. Vyjayanthi Movies had previously announced that she would not be part of the sequel.
Reports have since linked Sai Pallavi to the project, although details about her reported character and involvement have not been officially confirmed.
For now, the production schedule remains the key development, with regular filming expected to begin in October and continue into 2027.
