JSW Group has entered India’s electric commercial vehicle segment with the launch of AMPSTAR, a new electric vehicle brand operated under JSW Greentech. The company plans to manufacture and sell electric buses and trucks from its 90-acre facility in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Maharashtra.
The AMPSTAR range will cover vehicles with power outputs between 150 kW and 500 kW. JSW also plans to offer multiple ownership models, including leasing, outright purchase and Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS).
According to the company, AMPSTAR will provide an integrated commercial EV ecosystem covering vehicles, charging infrastructure, financing, operations and after-sales services.
AMPSTAR Electric Buses and Trucks
The electric bus range will include models measuring between 7 metres and 18 metres. These vehicles are intended for applications including staff transportation, city services, intercity travel and school transport.
AMPSTAR’s first electric truck will be a 55-tonne electric tractor-trailer. JSW Greentech plans to expand its commercial vehicle portfolio later with tippers, fixed-body trucks and dumpers.
The company said its electric commercial vehicles are being developed in-house for Indian operating conditions. The vehicles will use proprietary electric driveline software and control algorithms, along with a twin-cooling battery pack and high-strength monocoque frame.
Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Plant to Produce 15,000 EVs a Year
JSW’s 90-acre manufacturing facility in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar is planned with an annual production capacity of 15,000 electric commercial vehicles. This includes 10,000 electric buses and 5,000 electric trucks each year.
The facility will feature an automated truck-cabin assembly line, an integrated battery ecosystem and a pre-treatment and electro-deposition (PT-ED) process for bus manufacturing. JSW describes the facility as India’s largest integrated EV manufacturing plant.
JSW Greentech was established in 2024. In February this year, the company received clearance from the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) for the JSW 12M 51+D AC SDX, its first electric bus planned for production and commercialisation, subject to orders and applicable procurement processes.
Parth Jindal on JSW’s Electric Commercial Vehicle Strategy
Speaking at the launch, Parth Jindal, Managing Director of JSW Cement and JSW Paints, said the company wanted to create a dedicated electric truck and bus brand to support the shift towards electric mobility.
Jindal said trucks and buses account for 40% of India’s diesel consumption and noted that AMPSTAR was being introduced with two products. He also said construction of the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar factory had begun.
JSW Group Chairman and Managing Director Sajjan Jindal said the company’s entry into the electric commercial vehicle market was part of a broader objective to help reduce India’s oil imports and strengthen domestic manufacturing capabilities.
The name AMPSTAR combines “amp”, referring to the ampere, with “star”, which JSW says represents aspiration, leadership and progress. The brand will operate under the tagline “All In, All Electric.”
