Maruti Suzuki has expanded its CNG automatic lineup in India with the introduction of AMT variants of the Swift, Dzire and Baleno. The move gives buyers the option of combining the convenience of an automatic gearbox with the lower running costs associated with CNG vehicles.
With this launch, Maruti Suzuki becomes the second carmaker in India to offer a factory-fitted CNG powertrain with an AMT gearbox, following Tata Motors.
The Swift CNG AMT starts at ₹7.92 lakh, while the Dzire CNG AMT is priced from ₹8.53 lakh. The Baleno CNG AMT starts at ₹8.32 lakh. All prices are ex-showroom.
Swift and Dzire CNG AMT: Engine and Mileage
Both the Swift and Dzire CNG AMT use Maruti Suzuki’s 1.2-litre, three-cylinder Z12E petrol engine. When running on CNG, the engine produces 70 hp and 102 Nm of torque and is paired with a five-speed AMT gearbox.
Both models feature a 55-litre water-equivalent CNG tank positioned in the boot while retaining a spare wheel. The AMT versions also offer slightly higher claimed fuel efficiency than their respective manual CNG variants.
The Swift CNG AMT has a claimed efficiency of 35.34 km/kg, which is 2.49 km/kg higher than the CNG manual version. The Dzire CNG AMT returns a claimed 36.47 km/kg, exceeding the manual variant by 2.74 km/kg.
Maruti has also made suspension changes to account for the additional weight of the CNG components. Both cars get a dedicated CNG fuel-level display and a fuel-mode switch.
The Swift CNG AMT is available in VXi, VXi(O) and ZXi trims, while the Dzire CNG AMT is offered in VXi and ZXi variants.
Baleno CNG AMT: Price, Engine and Efficiency
The Baleno CNG AMT starts at ₹8.32 lakh and is available in Delta and Zeta variants. It uses the same 1.2-litre, three-cylinder Z12E engine found in the CNG manual version.
In CNG mode, the engine develops 70 hp and 102 Nm of torque and is paired with a five-speed AMT. Its claimed fuel efficiency stands at 34.47 km/kg, which is 0.86 km/kg higher than the corresponding CNG manual model.
Unlike the Maruti Victoris, which uses an underbody-mounted CNG tank, the Baleno continues to have its CNG tank positioned inside the boot. The spare wheel is also located in the luggage area, leaving limited usable boot space.
CNG Automatic Competition and Boot Space
The Swift and Dzire CNG AMT models compete with the Tata Tiago and Tigor CNG AMT variants. Maruti uses a single larger CNG tank, unlike Tata’s twin-cylinder arrangement. While this allows the CNG system to be accommodated differently, it significantly reduces the available boot space.
The Baleno CNG AMT competes with the Tata Altroz CNG AMT. The Altroz uses twin CNG cylinders in the boot and retains 210 litres of luggage capacity.
Apart from the addition of the automatic transmission, the Baleno CNG AMT remains largely similar to its manual CNG counterpart.
The new Swift, Dzire and Baleno CNG AMT variants expand Maruti Suzuki’s automatic CNG offerings, giving buyers more choices between manual and automated manual transmissions while retaining the CNG powertrain.
