The Central Government has announced a comprehensive set of reforms for NEET-PG 2026, introducing significant changes to the examination process, test centre allocation, security protocols, and counselling system. The reforms are aimed at making the postgraduate medical entrance exam more transparent, secure, and convenient for candidates across the country.
From conducting the exam in a single shift to assigning exam centres closer to candidates’ homes, the new measures seek to address concerns raised in previous years while ensuring a smoother experience for aspirants.
NEET-PG 2026 to Be Conducted in a Single Shift
One of the biggest changes announced by the Union Health Ministry is that NEET-PG 2026 will be held in a single session.
In recent years, the examination was conducted in multiple shifts due to logistical challenges and unforeseen circumstances. However, conducting the exam in separate sessions often raised concerns about variations in question paper difficulty.
By returning to a single-shift format, the government aims to ensure that every candidate appears for the same question paper under identical conditions, promoting greater fairness and consistency in the evaluation process.
Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda reviewed the preparations for the examination and instructed all concerned agencies to ensure that the exam is conducted in a secure, transparent, and technology-driven manner.
Candidates to Get Exam Centres Closer to Their Homes
The process of allotting examination centres has also been redesigned to reduce unnecessary travel for students.
Instead of the earlier first-come, first-served system, applicants will now be required to select three preferred states while filling out the application form.
Their correspondence state must be chosen as the first preference, allowing authorities to allocate a test centre closer to their residence whenever possible.
Previously, candidates who completed registration later often had to travel to distant cities or even other states because nearby centres had already reached capacity.
In another candidate-friendly move, details of the allotted test city will be announced nearly three weeks before the examination, giving aspirants enough time to make travel and accommodation arrangements well in advance.
The NEET-PG 2026 examination is scheduled for August 30.
Revised Exam Pattern Gives Candidates More Time Per Question
The National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) has also modified the examination pattern.
Under the revised format:
- The paper will contain 180 multiple-choice questions.
- Candidates will get 210 minutes to complete the examination.
Earlier, the test consisted of 200 questions carrying 800 marks.
Although the total examination duration remains unchanged, reducing the number of questions provides candidates with additional time to answer each question, helping reduce pressure during the exam.
Stronger Security Measures Introduced for NEET-PG 2026
To strengthen the credibility and integrity of the examination, the Centre has introduced several advanced security measures.
The Health Ministry said the entire process of preparing and delivering question papers has been upgraded with multiple layers of protection, including:
- Multi-level digital encryption
- Secure offline preparation of question papers
- Finalisation of papers shortly before the examination
- Controlled digital decryption only at the scheduled start time
These measures are intended to minimise the risk of paper leaks and maintain the confidentiality of the examination.
Aadhaar-Based Verification to Prevent Impersonation
Identity verification has also been strengthened for NEET-PG 2026.
Candidates will undergo Aadhaar-based authentication during the application process as well as on the day of the examination.
If fingerprint verification is unsuccessful, iris-based biometric authentication will be used as an alternative.
To further curb unfair practices, NBEMS has launched a dedicated email portal where candidates can report cases of impersonation, touts, or any suspicious activities related to the examination.
Authorities will also continue issuing regular advisories to help candidates stay alert against fraud.
Extensive Monitoring at Examination Centres
Security arrangements at examination centres have been significantly enhanced.
Measures include:
- Advance inspection and sealing of examination centres
- CCTV surveillance
- Biometric verification of candidates
- Frisking before entry
- Signal jammers to prevent electronic malpractice
- Dynamic allocation of computer systems
- Live monitoring through central and regional command centres
- Independent observers and appraisers at exam venues
More than 60,000 examination personnel will be deployed nationwide to ensure the smooth conduct of the examination.
Over 2.73 Lakh Candidates Registered
The Health Ministry has reported that 2,73,183 candidates have registered for NEET-PG 2026, representing an increase of over 12.5% compared to last year.
The examination will be conducted across approximately 340 cities at more than 1,300 test centres throughout India.
During the review meeting, the Health Minister instructed NBEMS, technology partners, and all stakeholders to make every effort to conduct a fair, transparent, and candidate-friendly examination.
Medical Counselling Process Made More Convenient
The reforms extend beyond the entrance examination and also simplify the counselling process for admissions under the All India Quota (AIQ).
One major relief for students is that candidates who receive a seat but wish to participate in later rounds for an upgrade will no longer need to report physically to the allotted college merely to complete admission formalities.
Their admission will remain valid while they continue participating in subsequent counselling rounds, subject to applicable rules.
Online Resignation and Digital Document Upload Introduced
The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) has also digitised several procedures to reduce paperwork and travel.
Key changes include:
- Eligible candidates can now resign from allotted seats online through the counselling portal.
- Students applying under the NRI quota for deemed universities can upload all required documents digitally instead of submitting them in person.
These initiatives are expected to make the counselling process faster, more transparent, and far more convenient for medical aspirants.
AIQ Counselling Schedule Announced
The first round of All India Quota (AIQ) counselling will commence on August 4, while the 2026–27 MBBS academic session is scheduled to begin on September 8.
The MCC has instructed all participating medical colleges and state counselling authorities to strictly adhere to the official admission timeline. Institutions have also been directed to treat Saturdays, Sundays, and gazetted holidays as working days to ensure admissions are completed without delays.
