New Delhi: YouTube is making changes to the way videos are recommended on Shorts, with the platform placing greater emphasis on original content. The update could have a significant impact on channels that primarily repost videos taken from other creators, social media platforms, films or viral content.

Announced on October 1, the change affects the Shorts recommendation system. YouTube already uses billions of signals, including users’ viewing history, interests and engagement, to determine which videos appear in recommendations. Under the updated approach, the originality of content will have a greater role in determining its reach through the Shorts feed.

What Is Changing on YouTube Shorts?

YouTube said the recommendation system is being updated to give more priority to original videos while reducing the distribution of content that is re-uploaded from other creators without meaningful additions.

In practical terms, creators who download a viral Short and upload essentially the same video on their own channel could see their content receive less exposure.

Minor changes are also unlikely to make such content substantially original. Simply adding a border, adjusting playback speed, applying a template or making other small technical modifications may not be enough to qualify as meaningful creative input.

However, creators can still use material from other sources when they add substantial value of their own. This can include original commentary, distinctive editing, analysis or personal storytelling.

Why Is YouTube Giving More Importance to Original Content?

Short-form video platforms have seen a rapid increase in reposted clips, aggregation accounts and content that moves between different social networks soon after being published.

YouTube’s updated approach is intended to provide greater opportunities for creators who produce original material. The platform’s reasoning is that creators are less encouraged to develop new content if copied versions can receive similar or greater visibility than the original.

The recommendation update also follows YouTube’s existing monetisation policies, which place restrictions on channels that rely heavily on repetitive, mass-produced or reused content without providing sufficient additional value.

What Does the Update Mean for Shorts Creators?

The change does not mean that every reaction video, compilation or Short using third-party clips will automatically lose reach.

YouTube’s existing policies allow transformed content when creators add meaningful commentary, editing, analysis or entertainment value. The greater concern is for channels whose primary activity is repeatedly downloading and reposting other people’s videos with little or no creative contribution.

For Shorts creators, the update therefore puts greater importance on adding something genuinely original rather than relying mainly on minor edits to content created by someone else.
