WhatsApp removed more than 45 lakh accounts in India during September 2026, according to the company’s latest monthly compliance report released under the Information Technology Rules, 2021.

The messaging platform confirmed that it banned a total of 45,40,300 accounts linked to Indian mobile numbers between September 1 and September 30. Of these, 12,93,500 accounts were blocked proactively through WhatsApp’s own detection systems, without waiting for users to report them.

WhatsApp identifies accounts registered with the +91 country code as Indian accounts. The latest figures highlight the platform’s efforts to detect and restrict accounts that violate its policies.

Why Did WhatsApp Ban More Than 45 Lakh Accounts?

WhatsApp uses several security mechanisms to identify suspicious activity and prevent misuse of its platform. These systems monitor accounts at different stages, starting from registration and continuing through messaging activity.

The company also considers negative feedback, including reports and blocks submitted by users, while identifying accounts that may be involved in abusive activities.

WhatsApp did not disclose the exact number of accounts banned separately for spam, scams, fraud or other violations. However, it stated that the action was taken against accounts found to be violating Indian laws or the platform’s Terms of Service.

WhatsApp Received Nearly 38,000 User Complaints

During September, WhatsApp received 37,943 grievance reports from users in India. Following these complaints, the company took action against 695 accounts.

The largest number of complaints fell under the ‘Other support’ category, which received 19,267 reports. WhatsApp also received 17,910 appeals from users whose accounts had been banned.

The company reported taking action on 561 accounts under Other support and 134 accounts under ban appeals.

Other complaint categories included 394 account support reports, 228 product support complaints and 114 safety-related reports. No account actions were recorded under these three categories.

WhatsApp Followed All Grievance Appellate Committee Orders

WhatsApp also received 127 directions from the Grievance Appellate Committee (GAC) during September 2026. According to the compliance report, the company complied with all 127 orders.

The monthly figures show that WhatsApp’s account enforcement process relies heavily on its internal detection systems. More than 12.93 lakh accounts were proactively banned before any user complaints were received, forming a significant part of the total accounts removed during the month.
