Bus passengers in West Bengal may have to pay more for private bus and minibus services after Durga Puja. The state government is considering a fare revision following demands from private bus operators, who have been seeking higher fares amid rising operating costs.
West Bengal Transport Minister Arjun Singh recently met representatives of private bus operators and indicated that the government would consider their demand after the Durga Puja celebrations. The discussion also focused on improving passenger amenities if fares are increased.
State Panchayat and Rural Development Minister Dilip Ghosh has also supported the demand for a fare revision. He said higher fares could help increase revenue and support better services for passengers.
Why Bus Operators Want Higher Fares
Private bus operators have been seeking a revision of the existing fare structure, which has remained unchanged since 2018. According to operators, rising fuel and maintenance expenses have made it increasingly difficult to run services under the current fares.
During the meeting with the Transport Minister, bus operators also raised concerns about toll charges, penalties and other financial pressures affecting their operations. They have argued that a revised fare structure is necessary to maintain services without putting additional financial pressure on operators.
Better Services Expected With Fare Revision
The proposed fare increase is also being linked to improvements in passenger facilities. Transport Minister Arjun Singh said that if fares are increased, operators should provide better amenities and ensure improved bus services, including better-managed buses and AC services.
Dilip Ghosh has similarly argued that passengers are willing to pay more when they receive improved services. His comments came after the Transport Department indicated that the issue of fare revision could be taken up after Durga Puja.
When Could Bus Fares Increase
For now, the proposed increase is under consideration and the final revised fare has not been announced. The government has indicated that the matter will be considered after Durga Puja.
The last major revision of West Bengal’s bus and minibus fares took place in 2018. With operators continuing to seek relief from higher operating costs, passengers will be watching the government’s decision on the new fare structure after the festival.
