The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued heavy to extremely heavy rainfall warnings for several parts of India on September 24 as a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal continues to influence weather conditions across eastern, central and southern regions. The system has also been associated with strong winds, thunderstorms and the possibility of flooding in vulnerable areas.
At the same time, the southwest monsoon is continuing its withdrawal from parts of northwest India. As a result, several northern areas are expected to experience relatively drier conditions compared with the eastern and southern parts of the country.
Heavy Rainfall Alert for Eastern and Central India
According to the IMD forecast, isolated extremely heavy rainfall is expected over Odisha and Chhattisgarh on September 24. The weather office has also warned of heavy rainfall in parts of Bihar, Jharkhand and East Madhya Pradesh.
Odisha and Chhattisgarh may experience strong winds along with the heavy rain. Thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds are also possible over Bihar, Jharkhand and Gangetic West Bengal. The IMD has separately issued an extremely heavy rainfall warning for Odisha and Chhattisgarh for September 24.
The weather conditions could also lead to flash flooding in vulnerable districts. The forecast specifically includes areas such as Dantewada and Narayanpur in Chhattisgarh, along with Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Cuttack, Khurda and Ganjam in Odisha.
Rain and Strong Winds Expected in Southern States
The weather system is also expected to affect parts of southern India. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is possible in coastal Andhra Pradesh, while Telangana and other parts of the region may also receive significant rain.
Isolated heavy showers are expected over interior Karnataka, Kerala, Mahe and Rayalaseema. Andhra Pradesh and Telangana may experience strong surface winds, while thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds are possible over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Kerala.
Some districts in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana could also face localised flooding or waterlogging during periods of intense rainfall. The IMD’s broader forecast for the system has highlighted the potential for heavy rain and strong winds across the region as the deep depression moves inland.
Northeast, West and North India Weather Forecast
In northeastern India, very heavy rainfall is expected in Assam and Meghalaya, while isolated heavy showers are possible across Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura and Arunachal Pradesh. Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim are also expected to receive heavy rainfall, with the IMD warning of very heavy rain over both Sub-Himalayan and Gangetic West Bengal on September 24.
Thunderstorms and gusty winds may affect several parts of the northeastern and eastern Himalayan region.
Meanwhile, isolated heavy rainfall is possible over Konkan, Goa and parts of Maharashtra, accompanied by strong winds in some areas. In northern and western parts of the country, thunderstorms and lightning are also possible over areas including Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat and West Madhya Pradesh.
The contrasting weather pattern comes as the Bay of Bengal system brings another spell of rain to eastern and central India, while the southwest monsoon continues its gradual withdrawal from northwest India.
