Producer Ektaa Kapoor has confirmed that The Dirty Picture 2, the sequel to Vidya Balan’s acclaimed 2011 film, is in development. The announcement comes 15 years after the original movie made headlines for its bold portrayal of female sexuality, ambition and self-expression in Indian cinema.

Kapoor has revealed that she now has a story she wants to bring to the screen, setting the stage for the return of the franchise. The upcoming film is expected to continue exploring themes of sexuality and personal freedom, although details about its cast, director and release date have not yet been announced.

Ektaa Kapoor Confirms The Dirty Picture 2

Speaking on Ranveer Allahbadia’s podcast, Ektaa Kapoor, head of Balaji Motion Pictures, confirmed that she is working on the sequel. Discussing the project, she said, “One very big film I’m making is The Dirty Picture 2. I’m planning it after 15 years. This time, I believe there is a story I want to tell.”

The producer’s statement follows renewed speculation about a possible continuation of the film. Kapoor’s decision to revisit the franchise after 15 years reflects her readiness to develop a new story that she believes is worth telling.

Although the project has been confirmed, the makers have not revealed who will lead the sequel or whether any members of the original cast will return. Further details about the film are expected to be announced later.

What Ektaa Kapoor Said About the Film’s Inspiration

During her conversation with Ranveer Allahbadia, Kapoor also discussed the inspiration behind the original The Dirty Picture. The 2011 film drew inspiration from the life of late South Indian actress Silk Smitha, who faced criticism for her open association with sexuality.

Explaining her perspective on the actress, Kapoor said, “I never saw her as a victim. I saw her as someone who celebrated her sexuality, and the film did so well.”

The producer indicated that the sequel would retain this broader approach to storytelling, focusing on an individual’s life while examining sexuality and freedom of choice in a contemporary context. However, the identity and background of the central character have not been disclosed.

The Dirty Picture: Cast, Box Office and Awards

Released on December 2, 2011, The Dirty Picture was directed by Milan Luthria and produced by Ektaa Kapoor and Shobha Kapoor under Balaji Motion Pictures and ALT Entertainment. Made on an estimated budget of ₹18 crore (approximately US$1.9 million), the film earned around ₹117 crore worldwide, emerging as a box-office success.

Vidya Balan played Reshma, who adopts the screen name Silk and navigates the challenges of the 1980s film industry. Her performance was widely acclaimed and became one of the film’s defining highlights.

The original film featured Naseeruddin Shah as Suryakanth, Emraan Hashmi as Abraham and Tusshar Kapoor as Ramakanth. Its music, composed by Vishal-Shekhar, also gained popularity, with songs such as “Ooh La La” and “Ishq Sufiyana” becoming well-known tracks.

Vidya Balan received the National Film Award for Best Actress and the Filmfare Award for Best Actress for her performance. The film also won the National Film Award for Best Costume Design, awarded to Niharika Khan.

With The Dirty Picture 2 now confirmed to be in development, the franchise is set to return with a new story. More information about its cast, creative team and release timeline is awaited.
