FSDA New Rules: The Food Safety and Drug Administration (FSDA) of Uttar Pradesh has introduced stricter transparency requirements for pharmacies across the state. The move comes after complaints about substantial differences between the prices at which medicines are purchased and the amounts charged to patients at hospitals and retail pharmacies.
Under the new directions, pharmacies will have to provide detailed information about medicine prices and other relevant details through their official websites. The measure is aimed at improving transparency and helping patients avoid being charged excessively for medicines.
What Do the New FSDA Rules Say?
According to the directive issued by FSDA Commissioner Dr. Roshan Jacob, all retail pharmacies, including pharmacies operating inside hospital premises, will be required to publish information related to the purchase and selling prices of medicines on their websites.
The online information will include details such as the manufacturer’s name, brand name, generic name, purchase price and the price at which the medicine is sold to patients.
Pharmacies located within hospitals will also come under these requirements, given that patients and their families often depend on them for medicines and other medical supplies.
Pharmacy Licence and Stock Details Must Also Be Available
The transparency requirements extend beyond medicine prices. Pharmacy websites will also have to display information about the pharmacist, registration details, licence number and the address of the premises.
Pharmacies will also be required to update their stock information regularly. Under the guidelines, stock details are to be updated every week, allowing patients to access more current information.
The FSDA has also linked the initiative to efforts to prevent counterfeit and adulterated medicines from entering the market. Large differences between purchase prices and the maximum retail price (MRP) have raised concerns about pricing practices as well as the possibility of substandard or counterfeit medicines reaching consumers.
QR Codes to Give Patients Easy Access to Prices
To make the information easier for patients to access, pharmacies have been directed to prominently display QR codes or mobile app links at their counters.
Patients will be able to scan the QR code using a mobile phone and access the pharmacy’s website. This is intended to provide direct access to information about medicine prices and other pharmacy details.
The new system is expected to give patients greater visibility into medicine pricing and pharmacy information while strengthening transparency across retail and hospital-based pharmacies.
The issue has also generated political discussion, particularly following a drug-related misappropriation controversy, which has been criticised by Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav.
