Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana: Parents looking to build a secure financial corpus for their daughter’s future can consider the Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana (SSY), a government-backed savings scheme specifically designed for girl children.

The scheme can help parents plan for major future expenses such as higher education and marriage. At the current interest rate of 8.2%, an annual investment of up to ₹1.5 lakh can help build a substantial corpus over the long term.

How to Build a ₹72 Lakh Corpus

Under the Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana, investors can deposit a maximum of ₹1.5 lakh in a financial year. The deposit period is 15 years, while the account matures after 21 years.

If ₹1.5 lakh is deposited every year for 15 years, the total amount deposited would be ₹22.5 lakh. According to the calculation provided, the investment would earn ₹49,32,119 as interest.

At the end of the 21-year maturity period, the total corpus would reach approximately ₹71,82,119, or nearly ₹72 lakh.

The final amount is driven by the scheme’s long-term compounding, under which returns accumulate over time.

Investment Can Start From ₹250

Parents do not need to begin with the maximum annual contribution. An SSY account can be started with a deposit of just ₹250.

The contribution can subsequently be increased depending on the family’s financial capacity. Regular long-term investment allows the benefit of compound interest to work over the investment period.

Government-Backed Savings Scheme

Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana is backed by the Central Government, providing a government-supported avenue for saving for a daughter’s future.

The scheme also provides tax-related benefits. Eligible investments can qualify for a tax deduction of up to ₹1.5 lakh. The interest earned and the maturity amount are also stated to be tax-free under the applicable tax provisions.

When Can Money Be Withdrawn?

The scheme provides a withdrawal facility for the daughter’s education after she reaches the age of 18 years. At that stage, up to 50% of the accumulated amount can be withdrawn for the permitted purpose.

However, withdrawing money before maturity reduces the amount available for the remaining investment period.

The account can also be closed in connection with the daughter’s marriage after she turns 18, subject to the applicable rules of the scheme.
