Simple Urine Test Shows Promise in Detecting Bladder Cancer Without Invasive Procedures

A simple urine test that could potentially help detect bladder cancer without immediately requiring an invasive procedure has shown encouraging results in an early NHS study. Researchers found that the test was able to identify more than nine out of 10 bladder cancer cases, raising hopes that it could help doctors decide which patients need urgent further investigation.

The research was published in European Urology Oncology and involved nearly 1,000 patients from seven hospitals across England and Scotland. The study was led by the University of Birmingham in partnership with diagnostics company Nonacus.

How Does the New Urine Test Detect Bladder Cancer?

The test, known as the Galeas test, examines a urine sample for genetic material associated with bladder cancer cells.

It looks for more than 450 DNA mutations linked to bladder cancer across 23 genes. Cancer cells can release this genetic material into urine, allowing scientists to search for possible signs of the disease without performing an invasive examination at the initial stage.

The test was originally developed by researchers at the University of Birmingham with support from Cancer Research UK and was later commercialised by Nonacus.

During the NHS trial, the Galeas test detected 92% of bladder cancer cases. Researchers also found that when the test result was negative, there was a greater than 99% likelihood that the patient did not have bladder cancer.

These findings suggest that the test could be particularly useful in helping doctors rule out the disease among patients considered to be at a lower risk.

Who Is Most at Risk of Bladder Cancer?

Bladder cancer is seen more frequently in men, particularly those over the age of 60.

One of the most common warning signs is blood in the urine, which may cause the urine to appear pink, red or brown. However, symptoms can vary, and the seriousness of the disease depends on several factors, including the size of the tumour and whether the cancer has spread.

As with many forms of cancer, early detection and timely treatment can play an important role in improving outcomes.

Could the Urine Test Replace a Cystoscopy?

At present, the Galeas urine test is not designed to replace a cystoscopy, which remains the standard method used to examine the bladder.

A cystoscopy involves inserting a thin tube with a camera through the urethra into the bladder. While it is an important diagnostic procedure, it can be uncomfortable and invasive for patients.

The new urine test could instead help doctors assess the likelihood of bladder cancer before deciding how urgently a patient needs a cystoscopy.

Patients identified as being at higher risk could be prioritised for further investigation, while those with a negative test result might be able to avoid an unnecessary procedure or safely delay it.

If future research confirms the results, the test could potentially prevent tens of thousands of unnecessary cystoscopies every year.

More Research Is Still Needed

Although the early findings are promising, researchers stress that further investigation is necessary before the test can become part of routine medical care.

A larger study will be needed to confirm how accurately the test performs across wider and more diverse patient groups and to determine how it can be safely used alongside existing cancer diagnostic methods.

For now, anyone experiencing possible symptoms of bladder cancer, including blood in the urine, should seek medical advice promptly. The urine test remains under evaluation and should not be considered a replacement for professional medical assessment or established diagnostic procedures.
