Rajinikanth’s highly anticipated sequel, Jailer 2, is scheduled to arrive in theatres on October 15, 2026. However, a disagreement over box office revenue sharing between distributors and theatre owners has created uncertainty around the film’s release in several districts of Tamil Nadu. The dispute comes as expectations remain high for the sequel to the superstar’s 2023 blockbuster.

‘Jailer 2’ Revenue-Sharing Dispute in Tamil Nadu

According to reports, distributors of Jailer 2 are seeking 75% of the box office collections, but theatre owners are unwilling to accept the proposed arrangement. A report by One India states that exhibitors are prepared to offer a maximum revenue share of around 65%.

The disagreement has reportedly stalled negotiations and could affect screenings in Salem, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri and Namakkal districts. Both sides are yet to reach a mutually acceptable agreement.

A similar issue reportedly arose during the release of Vijay’s Jana Nayagan, when a 65:35 revenue-sharing arrangement was eventually accepted. The current dispute has once again highlighted differences between distributors and exhibitors over the distribution of theatrical earnings for major releases.

Hindi Release Faces OTT Window Disagreement

The revenue-sharing negotiations in Tamil Nadu are not the only distribution challenge facing Jailer 2. The film’s Hindi-dubbed version has also encountered difficulties involving major multiplex chains, including PVR INOX and Cinepolis.

The disagreement concerns the period between a film’s theatrical release and its availability on streaming platforms. These multiplex chains generally require an eight-week exclusive theatrical window before a film can be released on OTT platforms.

However, the producers, Sun Pictures, have reportedly secured a four-week digital streaming deal, allegedly with Prime Video for ₹160 crore. This difference has raised concerns about the Hindi version’s availability in major national multiplex chains.

Although initial reports suggested that the Hindi release could face restrictions at these cinemas, the film’s team later clarified that the version would be released as planned on October 15. Pen Marudhar Entertainment is handling distribution, with the release expected to include regional and independent theatres across North India.

‘Jailer 2’ Advance Booking Figures

With a reported budget of ₹250 crore to ₹350 crore, the film has recorded substantial advance bookings ahead of its theatrical debut. Its domestic advance bookings have reportedly reached ₹38.09 crore gross, including ₹21.75 crore in opening-day pre-sales.

The Tamil version contributes the largest share, with advance bookings of ₹33.95 crore. Chennai leads the individual markets, accounting for ₹12.35 crore in advance sales.

Despite these figures, Jailer 2 trails some recent Tamil blockbusters in opening-day advance bookings in Tamil Nadu. Leo reportedly recorded ₹19.57 crore, while The GOAT registered ₹15.60 crore.

The film has received a UA 16+ certification from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) and has a runtime of 165.18 minutes. To address piracy concerns before the release, Sun Pictures has also obtained an interim injunction from the Madras High Court against unauthorised online exhibition of the film.

Can ‘Jailer 2’ Resolve Its Pre-Release Challenges?

Despite the distribution disputes, expectations remain high for Rajinikanth’s upcoming film. Some industry observers have projected that Jailer 2 could potentially earn ₹1,000 crore worldwide, although its final box office performance will depend on audience response and its theatrical reach.

With the October 15 release approaching, attention is now focused on whether distributors and theatre owners can settle their differences in time. A resolution would help ensure that the film reaches audiences across the affected regions without disruption.
