Malayalam cinema icon Mammootty received a standing ovation at the National Film Awards ceremony after being honoured with the Best Actor award for his performance in Bramayugam. The veteran actor accepted the award from President Droupadi Murmu at the official ceremony held in Kevadia, Gujarat.
As Mammootty was presented with the honour under the formal protocol followed at the National Film Awards, those attending the ceremony rose to applaud his contribution to Indian cinema.
Mammootty’s Award-Winning Performance in Bramayugam
Directed by Rahul Sadasivan, Bramayugam is a period horror film featuring Mammootty alongside Arjun Ashokan and Siddharth Bharathan.
Set in 17th-century Kerala, the film follows Thevan, a young folk singer who takes refuge in a remote mansion. His situation takes a dark turn when he becomes trapped in a disturbing world ruled by the mysterious Kodumon Potti, portrayed by Mammootty.
Shot entirely in black and white, Bramayugam uses a dark and unsettling visual style to explore Kerala folklore and mythology, while also touching on themes of power, caste and exploitation.
Mammootty’s Longstanding National Award Record
Mammootty is among India’s most celebrated actors, with a career spanning 45 years. He made his screen debut with Anubhavangal Paalichakal before establishing himself as one of Malayalam cinema’s leading stars during the 1980s.
The actor has now won three National Film Awards for Best Actor. His honours also include seven Kerala State Film Awards and 13 Filmfare Awards South.
Over the course of his career, Mammootty has worked across Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Hindi and English-language films. In 2026, the Government of India also honoured him with the Padma Bhushan for his contribution to the arts.
Mammootty Shares Best Actor Honour With Kartik Aaryan
Mammootty shared the National Film Award for Best Actor with Bollywood actor Kartik Aaryan.
Aaryan received the honour for his performance in the sports biographical film Chandu Champion. The joint recognition marked another significant achievement for both actors at the National Film Awards.
