Mahindra & Mahindra has introduced the new Thar OG in India, bringing a major update to its popular three-door SUV. The model has been launched at an introductory price of Rs 10.32 lakh (ex-showroom), with customer deliveries set to start from October 11.
The new Thar OG replaces the existing three-door Thar and represents a generational update to the SUV that was introduced in 2020. Despite retaining the model’s familiar rugged character, Mahindra has made significant changes to its platform, suspension, powertrains and equipment.
New Platform and Suspension
The Thar OG is based on Mahindra’s ‘M_Glyde 4G’ platform, which is an upgraded version of the company’s ladder-frame architecture used across several of its SUVs.
Mahindra says the new architecture is designed to improve structural strength, crash performance and durability while maintaining the SUV’s off-road-focused character.
One of the major mechanical changes is the new PENTALINK rear suspension, supported by DAVINCI damping technology. According to the company, the setup is intended to provide a more comfortable ride on regular roads while retaining the wheel articulation required for off-road driving.
More Powerful Engines and Off-Road Hardware
Mahindra has equipped the Thar OG with upgraded versions of its mHawk diesel and mStallion petrol engines. The company has not revealed detailed power and torque figures at the launch.
The automaker said the engines have been tuned to deliver stronger low-end torque and improved response, characteristics aimed at making the SUV more capable on highways as well as challenging off-road trails.
The new model also gets an electronic locking differential and multiple Terrain Modes. These modes allow the driver to modify throttle response, traction control and braking behaviour according to surfaces such as mud, sand and rock.
Exterior and Interior Updates
While the Thar OG continues with the distinctive boxy design associated with the nameplate, Mahindra has made several styling changes.
The SUV features a redesigned front grille, updated bumpers and signature LED lighting elements at both ends. It also gets R19 alloy wheels, giving the three-door SUV a more prominent road presence.
Inside, the cabin receives Truffle Brown leather seats. The basic dashboard layout remains familiar, but Mahindra has focused on improving the materials and overall fit and finish.
Safety Upgrades and Replacement of Existing Thar
Safety equipment has also received attention in the new Thar OG. The SUV comes with six airbags and front parking sensors as standard.
Mahindra has additionally equipped the model with disc brakes at both the front and rear. This replaces the rear drum-brake setup used on some versions of the previous model and is intended to improve braking performance and resistance to fade during repeated hard braking.
With the launch of the Thar OG, Mahindra has confirmed that the new SUV will take over from the existing three-door Thar. The model therefore becomes the next generation of the three-door Thar line, combining the familiar design and off-road focus with updated mechanicals and equipment.
