Vijay Sethupathi’s Maharaja, which emerged as one of the major Tamil releases of 2024, is set to receive a Hollywood adaptation, marking a significant milestone for Indian regional cinema.

The Tamil crime thriller has reportedly been optioned by a major international studio for an English-language remake. Oscar-winning actor Matthew McConaughey has been linked to the project for the lead role, although the producers have clarified that discussions with leading actors are still underway and that the studio will make any official casting announcement.

‘Maharaja’ Set for Hollywood Adaptation

The proposed remake marks the first Tamil-language feature to be officially acquired by a major studio for a Hollywood adaptation. The film attracted considerable international attention after its successful theatrical run, including its performance in China, where it collected ₹91 crore.

Producer Sudhan Sundaram said an international agency approached the makers after tracking the film’s performance in overseas markets.

The English-language version is expected to enter production next year. While reports about McConaughey’s possible involvement have generated interest, the makers have stressed that the casting process has not been formally announced.

What Is ‘Maharaja’ About?

Directed by Nithilan Saminathan, Maharaja is a non-linear neo-noir action thriller led by Vijay Sethupathi.

The story centres on a quiet barber who approaches the police after a metal trash can, which he calls “Lakshmi”, goes missing from his home. What initially appears to be a strange and straightforward complaint gradually develops into a much darker investigation involving a serious crime and a complicated story of revenge.

The original film features Vijay Sethupathi as Maharaja, with Anurag Kashyap playing Selvam, the central antagonist. Sachana Namidass portrays Jyothi, Maharaja’s daughter, while Mamta Mohandas and Natty Subramaniam appear in important supporting roles.

Produced by The Route, Think Studios and Passion Studios, the film earned nearly ₹200 crore worldwide and became one of the highest-grossing Tamil films released in 2024.

Where to Watch ‘Maharaja’ Online

Maharaja is currently available for streaming globally on Netflix. The film can be watched in its original Tamil version, along with dubbed versions in Hindi, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada. English subtitles are also available.

The film’s international success has also led to interest in other adaptations. Along with the Hollywood project, a Hindi-language remake is currently in development, further expanding the reach of the Tamil blockbuster.
