LPG Cylinder Safety Tips: If you use a domestic LPG cylinder, you should pay close attention when your monthly refill is delivered. Simply checking whether the seal appears intact may not always be enough to confirm that the cylinder contains the expected quantity of gas.
A cylinder can also lose gas because of valve problems, leakage or other issues. Therefore, consumers should carefully inspect and, where possible, weigh the cylinder at the time of delivery.
Is an Intact LPG Seal Enough?
Many consumers assume that an undamaged seal automatically means the cylinder has not been tampered with. However, the seal alone should not be treated as the only check.
Unauthorised handling or problems with the cylinder valve can potentially affect the quantity of LPG. This is why consumers should inspect the cylinder properly instead of relying only on its seal.
If the seal appears loose, damaged or improperly fitted, it is better to raise the issue with the delivery person before accepting the refill.
LPG Can Also Be Lost Due to Leakage
A reduction in gas can sometimes happen because of leakage or a faulty cylinder valve. Even a slow leak may cause LPG to escape gradually, particularly if the cylinder or its valve has a problem.

What Should You Check During LPG Delivery?
When your LPG cylinder arrives, take a few moments to inspect it before accepting the delivery.
1. Check the Seal
Make sure the safety seal is properly fitted and appears undamaged. If it looks suspicious, loose or broken, ask the delivery person to address the issue.
2. Check the Cylinder
Look for signs of physical damage, unusual dents, corrosion or valve-related problems. A visibly damaged cylinder should not be accepted without clarification from the distributor.
3. Weigh the Cylinder
Checking the weight is one of the most useful ways to verify the quantity of LPG.
A standard domestic LPG cylinder contains 14.2 kg of LPG when full. The empty cylinder’s weight, known as the tare weight, is marked on the cylinder.
Therefore:
Total expected weight = Tare weight + 14.2 kg LPG
If the measured weight is significantly lower than the expected weight, ask the delivery person to verify it before accepting the cylinder.
What If the Cylinder Weight Is Lower?
If the cylinder appears underweight, the seal is damaged or you notice any other problem, do not simply accept the delivery without raising the issue.
Ask the delivery person to recheck the cylinder and contact your LPG distributor if necessary. Keeping the delivery receipt and reporting the issue promptly can also help if you need to make a complaint later.
