India’s 4G smartphone segment is expected to make a modest recovery in 2026, even as the overall smartphone market faces a decline. According to Counterpoint Research, shipments of 4G smartphones in the country are projected to increase by 3% year-on-year this year.
The expected recovery follows a significant 48% decline in 4G smartphone shipments during 2025. Counterpoint estimates that 4G devices will account for 13% of India’s total smartphone market in 2026, up from 11% in 2025. The share is projected to increase further to 15% in 2027.
Higher 5G Prices Could Support 4G Demand
One of the factors supporting the 4G segment is the widening price difference between 4G and 5G smartphones. Rising component costs have increased the prices of 5G devices, particularly affecting buyers in the entry-level and budget categories.
As a result, some consumers are turning to 4G smartphones that offer comparatively better specifications and value at lower prices.
“4G smartphone shipments in India are expected to grow 3 per cent YoY in 2026 despite a decline in the overall market, with 4G share rising to 13 per cent in 2026 from 11 per cent in 2025,” Counterpoint said.
Demand Expands Into the Rs 10,000-Rs 20,000 Segment
The recovery in 4G smartphone demand is no longer limited to the traditional entry-level category. Counterpoint Research said demand is also gaining momentum in the Rs 10,000-Rs 20,000 price range.
Consumers in this segment are increasingly looking for smartphones with stronger specifications while avoiding the higher prices associated with 5G models. This shift is contributing to renewed demand for 4G devices as buyers look for a balance between features and affordability.
