India has strongly condemned the recent attacks on commercial ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz and called for an immediate reduction in hostilities across West Asia. Addressing the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Parvathaneni Harish, expressed serious concern over the renewed violence and urged all parties to exercise restraint.
The statement comes amid escalating tensions in the region, with India emphasizing the need to protect civilian lives, safeguard maritime trade, and restore peace through dialogue.
India Calls For Immediate De-Escalation In West Asia
Speaking during the UNSC Open Debate on the Middle East, Ambassador Harish said the resurgence of violence after a brief period of calm was “deeply concerning” and stressed the urgent need to prevent further escalation.
He reaffirmed India’s position that rising tensions threaten regional stability and global trade, calling on all sides to adopt restraint and work towards restoring peace.
India Condemns Attacks On Commercial Ships In Strait Of Hormuz
India also strongly denounced the attacks on commercial vessels GFS Galaxy, MT Al Bahiyah, and MT Mombasa, which were targeted while transiting the strategically important Strait of Hormuz earlier this month.
The incidents directly impacted Indian nationals, with one Indian citizen losing his life, another reported missing, and several crew members sustaining injuries, including some who were seriously hurt.
Highlighting the seriousness of the attacks, Ambassador Harish reiterated that India firmly opposes violence against civilian shipping and seafarers.
Safe Maritime Navigation Must Be Restored
India stressed that the uninterrupted movement of commercial vessels through international waterways is essential for global trade and energy security.
Calling for an immediate end to attacks on civilian infrastructure and merchant ships, Ambassador Harish urged all parties to ensure that navigation through the Strait of Hormuz remains free, secure, and in accordance with international law.
He emphasized that protecting international shipping lanes is critical to maintaining regional stability and preventing further disruptions to global commerce.
India Reaffirms Commitment To Peace And Regional Stability
Reiterating India’s long-standing position, Ambassador Harish said New Delhi remains committed to peace, dialogue, and adherence to international law.
India urged all stakeholders to avoid actions that could further intensify the conflict and instead focus on diplomatic efforts aimed at restoring stability across West Asia while ensuring the safety of civilians and commercial maritime operations.
