Incorrect Debit From Bank Account: Seeing money disappear from your bank account without a valid explanation can be alarming. The deduction could be the result of an unauthorised transaction, duplicate payment, incorrect bank charge or an amount deducted incorrectly.

Simply calling customer care may not always be enough. You should report the issue through the proper channel, keep evidence of your complaint and follow up until the matter is resolved. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has established rules for unauthorised electronic transactions that can protect customers in eligible cases.

Here’s what you should do if you find an incorrect debit in your bank account.

Report an Unauthorised Transaction Immediately

If you notice a transaction that you did not make, inform your bank without delay. Most banks allow customers to raise complaints through their mobile app, website, email, customer-care service or by visiting a branch.

Under applicable RBI rules, customers may have zero or limited liability in certain unauthorised transaction situations. However, timely reporting is extremely important.

In eligible cases, reporting the unauthorised transaction within three days of receiving the bank’s communication or alert can help protect you from financial liability. Waiting for the monthly bank statement is not advisable. As soon as you notice something suspicious, report it.

Submit the Complaint in Writing

Do not rely only on a phone call. It is better to create a formal written record of your complaint through the bank’s app, website, email or branch.

Clearly mention:

  • Date of the disputed transaction
  • Amount deducted
  • Transaction details or reference number
  • Reason you believe the debit is incorrect
  • Any other relevant information

After submitting the complaint, save the complaint or reference number. Also preserve screenshots, emails and messages exchanged with the bank.

According to the applicable RBI framework for unauthorised electronic transactions, the bank is required to provide provisional credit for the disputed amount within 10 working days of receiving the customer’s notification, subject to the relevant conditions and regulations.

What If the Bank Has Charged You Incorrectly?

Not every disputed debit is necessarily an unauthorised transaction. Sometimes the issue may involve a duplicate debit or an incorrect bank charge.

For example, the same payment could be deducted twice, or the bank may have charged an amount that appears higher than the applicable fee.

In such cases, ask the bank to explain why the charge was applied and which tariff, fee schedule or rule was used. Request a clear calculation showing how the amount was determined.

Keep copies of your bank statements, applicable charge schedules, emails and all communication with the bank. Proper documentation can make it easier to establish your case.

Give Your Bank an Opportunity to Resolve the Issue

Before escalating the complaint to the RBI Ombudsman, you generally need to approach the concerned bank or regulated entity first.

The RBI Ombudsman mechanism provides a free avenue for eligible complaints concerning deficiencies in service by covered financial institutions.

If the bank does not respond within 30 days, or you are unhappy with its response, you may be able to approach the RBI Ombudsman, provided the complaint meets the applicable conditions.

How to Complain to the RBI Ombudsman

If the bank fails to provide a satisfactory solution, an eligible customer can escalate the matter through the RBI’s grievance-redressal mechanism.

There is no fee for filing a complaint under the RBI Ombudsman process. Customers can also contact the RBI’s helpline at 1448 for information about the complaint process and its status.

However, not every complaint automatically qualifies. You must satisfy the eligibility requirements under the applicable Ombudsman Scheme and submit the complaint within the prescribed timeframe, generally after receiving the bank’s response or after the bank’s response period has expired.

What Should You Do After Filing the Complaint?

Submitting a complaint does not mean you should stop monitoring your account. Continue checking your bank transactions and account balance to make sure no additional unauthorised deductions take place.

If the bank provides a provisional credit for the disputed amount, keep all related documents until the investigation and complaint are officially closed.

For additional protection in the future, keep SMS and transaction alerts enabled on your bank account. Regularly reviewing your bank statements can also help you spot unusual or incorrect debits at an early stage.

Bottom Line

If money is deducted from your bank account without a valid reason, act quickly. Report unauthorised transactions immediately, submit a written complaint, preserve all evidence and track the complaint until the issue is resolved. If the bank does not address the matter within the applicable timeframe, the RBI’s grievance-redressal mechanism may provide the next route for eligible customers.
