Hyundai Tucson Plug-in Hybrid: Hyundai has unveiled the latest Tucson Plug-in Hybrid for the global market, with the new model developed specifically for Europe. The updated SUV combines a turbo-petrol engine with two electric motors and brings a larger battery pack than its predecessor.

The new Tucson Plug-in Hybrid produces 292 PS and 380 Nm of torque, while its upgraded 17.1 kWh battery is designed to provide an electric driving range of around 81 km under the WLTP cycle. The model is not planned for launch in India.

Hyundai Tucson Plug-in Hybrid Powertrain

The new Tucson Plug-in Hybrid uses a 1.6-litre turbocharged direct-injection petrol engine combined with P1 and P2 electric motors. The powertrain is paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission and comes with a mechanical all-wheel-drive (AWD) system as standard.

The new P1 motor is integrated into the transmission. Its functions include helping start the petrol engine, generating electricity and providing additional assistance to the engine when more power is required.

The P2 electric motor produces 79 kW (106 hp), while the P1 motor generates 13 kW (17 hp). Working together with the petrol engine, the system develops a combined 292 PS and 380 Nm.

Hyundai claims the new Tucson Plug-in Hybrid can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.9 seconds.

For comparison, the previous model produced 288 PS and 379 Nm. It was available with both front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive configurations, with 0–100 km/h acceleration times of 7.5 seconds and 7.6 seconds respectively.

Larger 17.1 kWh Battery and 81 km Electric Range

The updated Tucson Plug-in Hybrid receives a significantly larger battery than the outgoing model. The previous version used a 13.8 kWh battery, while the new SUV gets a 17.1 kWh unit.

The increased capacity helps extend the SUV’s electric-only driving capability. Hyundai is targeting an electric range of approximately 81 km on the WLTP cycle for the new AWD version.

Despite the larger battery, the SUV does not support DC fast charging. Charging is limited to an AC input of up to 7.2 kW. Hyundai has not yet revealed how long it takes to charge the battery from 10% to 100%.

New Tucson Dimensions

The fifth-generation Hyundai Tucson is being developed in both short-wheelbase and long-wheelbase configurations. The short-wheelbase version will be offered in Europe.

The European model measures 4,560 mm in length, 1,900 mm in width and 1,670 mm in height. Its wheelbase measures 2,720 mm.

Compared with the previous-generation model, the new Tucson is 35 mm longer and 35 mm wider, while its height has increased by 20 mm. The wheelbase has also grown by 40 mm.
