Gold Price Today: Gold prices moved higher after the US Federal Reserve decided to keep interest rates unchanged, even as inflation risks continue to rise due to ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. The precious metal gained momentum as investors assessed the Fed’s policy stance and growing uncertainty surrounding the global economic outlook.
Gold Climbs Above $4,100 an Ounce
Spot gold rose as much as 0.8%, briefly crossing the $4,100 per ounce mark after recording a 0.9% gain in the previous trading session. The rally came after the Federal Reserve opted to leave benchmark interest rates unchanged.
Although policymakers voted 9-3 in favor of maintaining current rates, the split decision suggested that some officials believe higher borrowing costs may still be necessary if inflation continues to remain elevated.
Federal Reserve Signals Inflation Remains a Concern
Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh emphasized that the decision to hold rates should not be interpreted as a pause in the central bank’s fight against inflation.
He indicated that if inflation remains persistently high over the coming months, interest rate increases could still be considered as part of the Fed’s strategy to bring prices under control.
Higher interest rates typically reduce the appeal of non-interest-bearing assets such as gold. However, the latest policy decision has provided temporary support to the precious metal as investors look for safe-haven investments.
Gold Holds Key Support Despite Recent Weakness
Gold prices have declined by more than 20% since the conflict between the United States and Iran intensified over five months ago. Rising energy prices have fueled inflation concerns, strengthening expectations that interest rates could stay higher for longer.
Despite the broader decline, gold has managed to hold above the important $4,000 per ounce support level since late June, supported by renewed buying whenever prices dip.
Analysts See Potential for Further Gains
Market experts believe the Federal Reserve’s latest decision could encourage investors to return to precious metals.
According to Nicky Shiels, Head of Research and Metals Strategy at MKS PAMP SA, gold and other underperforming assets could witness relief rallies as investors reassess market conditions.
She noted that confidence is gradually building among investors and identified $4,200 per ounce as a key level that could determine gold’s next major move.
Middle East Tensions Continue to Support Safe-Haven Demand
Geopolitical uncertainty also remains a major factor supporting gold prices.
Tensions in the Middle East escalated after US President Donald Trump stated that the United States would respond to a recent Iranian attack on an American military base in Jordan.
At the same time, the US and Saudi Arabia reportedly carried out strikes against Iran-backed militant groups in Iraq after Saudi officials intercepted drones allegedly targeting the country’s oil infrastructure.
The renewed geopolitical risks also pushed oil prices higher, with crude recording its biggest single-day gain in more than two weeks before stabilizing.
Other Precious Metals Also Gain
As of 7:50 a.m. Singapore time, spot gold was trading around $4,091.40 per ounce, up 0.6%.
Other precious metals also posted gains:
- Silver climbed 1.1% to $58.37 per ounce.
- Platinum traded higher.
- Palladium also advanced.
Meanwhile, the Bloomberg Dollar Spot Index slipped 0.1% after falling 0.3% in the previous session, making gold relatively more attractive for international buyers.
Outlook for Gold Prices
Gold continues to be influenced by a combination of monetary policy expectations and geopolitical developments. While persistent inflation and the possibility of higher interest rates remain headwinds, ongoing global uncertainty and safe-haven demand are helping the precious metal stay resilient.
Investors will closely watch upcoming US economic data, Federal Reserve commentary, and developments in the Middle East for further clues on the direction of gold prices in the coming weeks.
