Walmart-owned e-commerce giant Flipkart is reportedly gearing up to enter India’s highly competitive food delivery market. According to a report by The Times of India (TOI), the company is planning to launch a pilot food delivery service in Bengaluru within the next 30 days, with a nationwide expansion to be considered based on customer response.

If the move materialises, Flipkart will compete with established players such as Zomato and Swiggy while further expanding its presence beyond traditional e-commerce.

Bengaluru Likely to Be the First Test Market

As per the report, Flipkart plans to begin with a limited rollout in Bengaluru, allowing the company to evaluate customer demand, operational efficiency and overall service performance before taking the platform to other cities.

Flipkart Group CEO Kalyan Krishnamurthy reportedly described food delivery as an important extension of the company’s broader digital commerce ecosystem. He said the pilot programme will help the company gather customer feedback and fine-tune the service before making any large-scale expansion decisions.

Separate Food Delivery App Under Consideration

The report also suggests that Flipkart is exploring multiple ways to offer the new service.

Besides developing a dedicated food delivery app, the company is also considering integrating the service with the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC). This strategy could help Flipkart reach a wider customer base while leveraging India’s growing open digital commerce ecosystem.

However, the company has not officially confirmed the app’s features or launch timeline.

Flipkart Sees Opportunity Despite Swiggy-Zomato Dominance

India’s online food delivery market is currently led by Zomato and Swiggy, but Flipkart believes there is still room for new competitors.

According to market estimates cited in the report, Zomato held nearly 57% of the food delivery market at the end of December, while Swiggy accounted for the remaining 43%.

Krishnamurthy reportedly said that industries continue to evolve through innovation and disruption, creating opportunities for new businesses even in highly competitive segments.

Expanding Beyond Traditional E-Commerce

Since its launch as an online bookstore, Flipkart has steadily diversified into several business categories, including:

  • Consumer electronics
  • Fashion and lifestyle products
  • Grocery delivery
  • Travel services
  • Digital commerce solutions

The company believes India’s e-commerce industry has followed a similar growth trajectory to global markets, gradually expanding from books and electronics into everyday essentials and service-based businesses.

Flipkart also continues to strengthen its quick commerce and grocery operations while focusing on customer experience rather than competing solely on pricing.

Gen Z Emerging as a Key Growth Driver

Flipkart has identified Gen Z consumers as one of its fastest-growing customer segments.

According to Krishnamurthy, younger shoppers are increasingly spending on experiences such as travel, dining and entertainment, in addition to categories like fashion, beauty, electronics and home décor.

He also highlighted the growing popularity of live commerce, video-led shopping, and digital engagement tools that are reshaping how younger consumers discover and purchase products online.

The trend is also benefiting Cleartrip, Flipkart’s travel platform, which has witnessed growing interest from younger travellers.

Official Launch Date Yet to Be Announced

Although reports suggest that the Bengaluru pilot could begin within the next month, Flipkart has not officially confirmed the launch date or announced detailed plans for its food delivery service.

If introduced, the move would mark another major expansion for the e-commerce giant and could intensify competition in India’s rapidly growing online food delivery industry.

Flipkart is reportedly preparing to enter the food delivery business with a pilot launch in Bengaluru. The company is said to be exploring both a standalone food delivery app and integration with ONDC, while leveraging its strong e-commerce ecosystem and growing Gen Z customer base. An official announcement is still awaited, but the move could significantly reshape India’s online food delivery landscape.
