The central government has announced a change to the wage threshold for social security coverage under the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO). The monthly limit has been raised from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000, effective September 17. According to the provided report, the revision is expected to extend Provident Fund (EPF), Pension (EPS) and Employees’ Deposit Linked Insurance (EDLI) benefits to more than 5.1 million additional employees.

However, earning less than ₹25,000 per month does not automatically make every employee eligible for all three schemes. Workers must also meet the specific eligibility requirements applicable to each benefit.

EPFO Wage Limit Hike: Who Is Eligible?

The revised threshold is primarily intended to cover employees who were previously outside EPF coverage because their applicable wages exceeded the earlier monthly limit of ₹15,000.

According to the information attributed to the Ministry of Labour, employees earning between ₹15,000 and ₹25,000 per month may become eligible for EPF membership if they satisfy the relevant conditions.

Employees who are already EPF members will continue to be governed by the applicable membership and contribution rules. The revised wage ceiling does not necessarily mean that every existing member’s contribution will automatically increase.

Eligibility for EPF, EPS and EDLI must be assessed according to the rules governing each scheme.

How to Enrol in EPF, EPS and EDLI

Employees generally cannot join these schemes simply by submitting separate applications independently. The employer plays a key role in checking eligibility and completing the required formalities.

Employees can follow these steps to verify their status:

  1. Check eligibility: Confirm your applicable monthly wages and whether you meet the conditions for the relevant scheme.
  2. Contact HR or payroll: Ask your employer’s human resources or finance department to verify your eligibility and explain the enrolment process.
  3. Provide the required documents: Submit the identification, employment details, Aadhaar information and bank details requested by your employer.
  4. Verify contributions: After enrolment, check your salary slip and EPFO passbook to confirm that employee deductions and employer contributions have been recorded correctly.

Employees should rely on confirmation from their employer and official EPFO information to establish whether the revised limit applies to them.

Will Your Monthly PF Deduction Increase?

The revised wage ceiling could affect the contribution calculation for employees who become eligible under the applicable rules. The actual contribution base will depend on the relevant wage definition, membership status and EPFO provisions.

For illustration, if an employee’s full monthly wage of ₹25,000 is used as the PF contribution base and the employee contribution rate is 12%, the monthly deduction would be ₹3,000.

The employer’s contribution is also generally calculated at the applicable rate, with the relevant portion allocated between EPF and EPS according to the rules. The EDLI contribution is paid separately by the employer.

It is important to note that this example does not mean every employee earning ₹25,000 will automatically have ₹3,000 deducted each month. Actual deductions depend on the employee’s applicable contribution base and the rules governing their membership.

Before assuming that take-home salary or retirement benefits will change, employees should confirm how the revised wage limit applies to their individual employment situation.

The applicability of the revised wage ceiling, enrolment conditions and contribution calculations depends on the relevant government notifications and scheme rules. Employees should verify their eligibility and contribution details with their employer or through official EPFO channels.
