The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has extended the deadline for employers to submit Provident Fund (PF) contributions and file their Electronic Challan-cum-Returns (ECR) for September 2026. Employers and related establishments will now have until October 31, 2026, to complete the process, instead of the earlier deadline of October 15.

The extension was announced by the EPFO’s Compliance Division through an official circular dated October 13, 2026. The decision comes after changes to salary limits under the Code on Social Security, 2020, took effect on September 17, 2026, creating technical and administrative difficulties for employers.

Why Has EPFO Extended the PF Filing Deadline?

The revision of salary limits required employers to update their payroll systems, salary records and calculations for statutory contributions, including PF.

Several establishments faced difficulties adapting their existing systems to the revised requirements. These changes affected the calculation of employee salaries and PF contributions, making it challenging for some employers to prepare and submit their ECRs within the original deadline.

To provide additional time for these adjustments, the EPFO extended the September filing deadline. The decision was taken under the authority of the Central Provident Fund Commissioner.

What Is ECR and Why Is It Important?

The Electronic Challan-cum-Return (ECR) is an online filing system through which employers submit employee-related PF details and deposit the required contributions.

Employers must provide the relevant salary and contribution information through the EPFO portal. Accurate filing helps ensure that the required PF contributions are reported and deposited in accordance with applicable rules.

The deadline extension is intended to help establishments complete these compliance requirements while adjusting to the revised salary limits.

Who Will Benefit From the Extended Deadline?

The extension offers additional time to companies and establishments that encountered difficulties updating their payroll and compliance systems following the salary limit revision.

Employers can now complete their ECR filing and deposit the applicable PF contributions for the September 2026 salary period by October 31, 2026.

However, the relaxation applies specifically to the September 2026 ECR filing period. It should not be interpreted as a general extension of PF filing deadlines for subsequent months.

Employers should verify their salary records, ensure that contribution calculations reflect the applicable requirements and complete the filing process within the revised deadline.
