A major infrastructure project is underway on the Dehradun-Haridwar Highway to address traffic congestion, improve road safety and make travel between the two cities more convenient. The ₹320 crore project covers a 36-kilometre stretch of the highway and is planned for completion within the next two years.
Once the work is completed, the upgraded highway is expected to provide smoother traffic movement while addressing several locations that have witnessed congestion and accidents.
Utility Shifting Work Resumes After Rain
Construction activities had slowed during the prolonged rainy period. With weather conditions now improving, work has picked up again, beginning with the relocation of utilities along the highway.
Electricity poles and cables, water pipelines and other government utility services are being shifted to clear the area required for the main construction work. Completing this stage will allow the major highway development activities to move ahead at a faster pace.
2.25-Km Elevated Flyover at Mianwala-Nakraunda
One of the key components of the project will be the construction of a 2.25-kilometre elevated flyover between Mianwala and Nakraunda. It will be the longest elevated section included in the project.
A total of seven flyovers have been approved at important traffic points. These structures are being planned to separate local traffic from vehicles travelling along the main highway, helping reduce congestion at busy intersections.
The planned flyovers include Mianwala-Nakraunda, Jakhan Bridge near the Dental College, two separate structures at Jeevangarh, one at Chhidarwala near the main market and two flyovers in the Raiwala area.
44-Km Service Roads and Pedestrian Facilities
The project also includes approximately 44 kilometres of service roads on both sides of the highway. These lanes are intended to improve movement for local residents and provide safer access for pedestrians and nearby traffic.
Two foot overbridges are also planned to allow pedestrians to cross the highway safely. Their exact locations are currently being finalized.
Several junctions on the route towards Haridwar, including Majri, Dental College and Raiwala, will also undergo scientific redesign. The objective is to address accident-prone points and improve the overall safety of these intersections.
After the project is completed, the Dehradun-Haridwar route is expected to offer faster and more organized travel, along with improved road infrastructure and safety features designed according to modern highway standards.
