Around 4,000 public health workers employed by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) have received a salary increase ahead of Diwali. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced that their minimum monthly salary has been raised to ₹18,000, along with dearness allowance (DA) as per applicable guidelines.

The decision is expected to cost the government approximately ₹52 crore. The move aims to improve the financial security of employees who have spent years supporting public health services across the national capital.

Around 4,000 MCD Employees to Benefit from the Salary Hike

Under the revised arrangement, the salaries of approximately 4,000 workers will be linked to Level 1 of the Pay Matrix, which carries a minimum basic salary of ₹18,000 per month. Eligible employees will also receive dearness allowance according to the applicable rules.

These workers were initially appointed as Domestic Breeding Checkers (DBCs), with responsibilities that included monitoring and controlling mosquitoes responsible for spreading dengue. Their designation was later changed to Multi-Tasking Staff (Public Health).

Despite the change in designation, they have continued carrying out public health duties, including visiting households and educating residents about disease prevention. MCD Commissioner Sanjeev Khirwar said these employees have been serving Delhi’s public health system for many years.

Revised Salaries Credited to Employees’ Bank Accounts

Delhi Mayor Parvesh Wahi said the proposal to increase salaries and provide dearness allowance was introduced during the previous budget session before being sent to the Chief Minister for approval.

According to the mayor, the revised salaries have already been credited to the workers’ bank accounts. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the decision recognises the contribution of employees who have supported Delhi’s public health infrastructure over the years. She also emphasised the government’s responsibility to improve their welfare and quality of life.

MCD to Recruit 2,500 Sanitation Workers Before Diwali

Alongside the salary revision, the MCD has announced plans to recruit 2,500 sanitation workers before Diwali. The recruitment is intended to strengthen the city’s cleaning services and improve sanitation in streets, markets and public areas.

The need for effective waste management becomes particularly important during festivals, when larger crowds gather in markets and other public spaces. Increased footfall can lead to more complaints about accumulated garbage and delayed cleaning.

To address these concerns, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has directed the MCD to organise night-time cleaning drives in major markets and residential areas. She has instructed officials to ensure that sanitation improves on the ground and warned against negligence in carrying out cleaning responsibilities.
