Bank customers are set to get some relief ahead of a three-day nationwide strike scheduled for the final week of September. The United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) has called for a strike from September 28 to 30, 2026.
To reduce disruption caused by the strike and the weekly holidays immediately before it, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has allowed banks to remain operational on Sunday, September 27.
The Finance Ministry has also confirmed that public sector banks and regional rural banks will function normally on September 27, a day before the strike begins.
Bank Strike Scheduled From September 28 to 30
The UFBU has announced a three-day nationwide bank strike beginning Monday, September 28, and continuing through Wednesday, September 30.
The timing means customers could otherwise face a prolonged interruption in banking services because September 26 and 27 fall on the regular weekly holiday period. With the strike following immediately afterward, several banking services could have been affected over an extended period.
The decision to keep banks open on September 27 is intended to provide customers with an opportunity to complete essential banking work before the strike starts.
Banks to Remain Open on September 27
The RBI has permitted public sector banks and regional rural banks to operate normally on Sunday, September 27, 2026.
The permission covers bank branches and offices, along with ATM-linked branches and currency chests. These facilities have been authorised to remain fully operational on the day.
The move is aimed at reducing the inconvenience that customers could face because of the consecutive holidays and the three-day strike.
Government Appeals to Bank Unions
The Department of Financial Services under the Ministry of Finance has said that the convenience and welfare of bank customers remain a priority.
The government and bank management have also appealed to bank employee unions to reconsider and postpone the proposed strike. At the same time, measures are being taken to maintain essential banking services and reduce disruption during the strike period.
For customers, September 27 will therefore provide an additional opportunity to complete banking-related work before the three-day strike begins on September 28.
