Bank customers planning to visit a branch on Friday, September 18, should check the local bank holiday schedule before stepping out. The day marks Unitarian Anniversary Day, but the holiday is not applicable across the entire country.

According to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) bank holiday schedule, branches in certain districts of Meghalaya will remain closed on September 18. Banks in most other parts of India will continue to operate as usual.

Banks Closed in These Meghalaya Districts

Banks will observe a local holiday on September 18 in parts of Meghalaya to mark Unitarian Anniversary Day. Branches in East Khasi Hills, East Jaintia Hills and South West Khasi Hills will remain closed.

Customers in these districts who need to complete branch-related banking work may need to visit on another working day.

Will Banks Be Open in Delhi, UP and Other States?

The September 18 holiday is limited to specific areas and does not apply nationwide. Banks will remain operational in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Telangana and several other states.

However, customers should check the holiday schedule of their particular branch before visiting, as bank holidays can vary by state and region.

Remaining Bank Holidays in September 2026

Several bank holidays are scheduled in different parts of India during the rest of September. The closures include:

  • September 20 – Sunday
  • September 21 – Banks closed in Bhubaneswar and Thiruvananthapuram for Srimanta Sankardev Janmotsav and Sri Narayana Guru Samadhi
  • September 22 – Banks closed in Ranchi for Karma Puja
  • September 23 – Banks closed in Jammu and Srinagar for Maharaja Hari Singh Ji’s birthday
  • September 25 – Banks closed in Gangtok for Indrajatra
  • September 26 – Banks closed for the fourth Saturday
  • September 27 – Sunday

Can You Use Online Banking During a Bank Holiday?

A branch holiday does not mean that all banking services stop. Customers can continue using digital facilities such as mobile banking, internet banking, UPI and ATMs.

However, services that require a physical branch visit, including cash deposits and certain cheque-related tasks, may have to wait until the next working day.

Therefore, customers with urgent banking work on September 18 should first confirm the location of their branch and check whether the local holiday applies. This can help avoid an unnecessary visit to a closed branch.
