Bank customers planning to visit a branch on Friday, October 2, should take note of the holiday. According to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) holiday calendar, bank branches across the country will remain closed on October 2 on account of Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti.

The closure will apply to both public and private sector banks, including State Bank of India, Punjab National Bank, Bank of Baroda, Canara Bank, Axis Bank, HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank.

Why Are Banks Closed on October 2?

October 2 is observed every year as Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti, marking the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. The day commemorates his contribution to India’s freedom movement and his emphasis on truth and non-violence.

As October 2 is a national holiday, physical bank branches will remain shut across all states and Union Territories.

Bank Holidays in October

Apart from Gandhi Jayanti, several other dates in October will also affect bank branch operations.

October 4, Sunday, will be a regular weekly holiday, so bank branches across the country will remain closed.

October 10, Saturday, is the second Saturday of the month, when banks are closed nationwide. Banks in Karnataka and West Bengal will also observe a holiday on this date for Mahalaya Amavasya.

Customers should check the RBI holiday calendar and their individual bank’s schedule before visiting a branch, particularly when planning time-sensitive transactions.

Online Banking and UPI Services Will Continue

The closure of physical branches does not mean that all banking services will stop. Customers can continue using internet banking, mobile banking and UPI for digital payments and fund transfers.

ATMs will also remain available for cash withdrawals and other services. However, certain activities that require a physical branch, including some cheque-related processing and other in-person services, may not be available during the holiday.
