Apple may be facing weaker demand for its latest flagship smartphones, with a report suggesting that the company has asked some suppliers to scale back component production for the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. Higher smartphone prices and rising memory chip costs are reportedly putting pressure on demand.

According to Nikkei Asia, Apple reduced its component orders for October by at least 15% compared with its original plans. The reported move comes less than a month after the company introduced its latest flagship devices alongside its foldable smartphone, the iPhone Duo.

The report, citing people familiar with the matter, says Apple has taken a more cautious approach to shipments since early September. Higher prices may be influencing consumers’ purchasing decisions. In the United States, the iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at $1,299. Both models cost $100 more than their predecessors.

Reuters reported that it could not independently verify the production cuts. Apple had not immediately responded to Reuters’ request for comment.

Why Is Apple Reducing iPhone 18 Pro Component Orders?

Rising memory chip prices are reportedly one of the main factors behind Apple’s decision.

Technology companies are purchasing large volumes of advanced memory and other chips to support AI data centres. This growing demand has tightened supply and increased costs for manufacturers of smartphones, laptops and other electronic products.

Apple has previously faced pressure from rising memory and storage expenses. In June, the company increased prices for its iPads and MacBooks, citing higher costs.

The latest iPhone models also require high-performance memory to support increasingly complex artificial intelligence features. These requirements add to the cost of manufacturing the devices at a time when component prices are climbing.

iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max Prices in India

Apple introduced the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max in September, alongside its first foldable smartphone, the iPhone Duo.

In India, the iPhone 18 Pro is priced from ₹1,64,900, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at ₹1,79,900.

The higher prices could affect customers deciding whether to upgrade from older iPhone models. For some buyers, the increased cost may make it more difficult to justify purchasing a new flagship smartphone.

Nikkei Asia reported that demand for devices had been weaker between late August and October. Changes to Apple’s iPhone launch schedule may also have contributed to adjustments in component orders.

What Could the Reported Cuts Mean for iPhone 18 Sales?

The reported reduction in component orders suggests Apple may be adjusting its supply expectations for its premium smartphones in response to changing market conditions.

However, a 15% reduction in component orders does not automatically mean that finished smartphone production has fallen by the same percentage. The eventual impact on shipments and sales will depend on how consumer demand develops over the coming months.

The situation also highlights a broader challenge for smartphone manufacturers. As investment in AI data centres increases demand for advanced memory chips, device makers face higher component costs that could influence product pricing and production decisions.
