Ration card benefits in India vary according to the category under which a household is registered. Under the National Food Security Act (NFSA), 2013, eligible families receive food grains through two major categories: Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) and Priority Household (PHH).
Although both categories provide food security assistance, the monthly quantity of food grains is calculated differently. AAY households receive a fixed quantity per household, while PHH beneficiaries receive food grains according to the number of eligible family members.
What Is an AAY Ration Card?
The Antyodaya Anna Yojana is designed to support the poorest and most vulnerable eligible households. Under this category, a qualifying household is entitled to 35 kg of food grains per month, regardless of how many family members live in the household.
For example, a household with two members and one with seven members would each receive the same standard monthly entitlement of 35 kg under AAY.
The quantity is calculated per household rather than separately for every individual.
What Is a PHH Ration Card?
The Priority Household category covers eligible families identified by state and Union Territory authorities under the NFSA.
Unlike AAY, the PHH entitlement is calculated on a per-person basis. Each eligible household member is entitled to 5 kg of food grains per month.
This means the total quantity a family receives increases with the number of eligible members registered under its ration card.
AAY vs PHH: How Much Ration Does a Family Get?
The difference between the two categories becomes clear when comparing their monthly food grain entitlements.
| Eligible family members | AAY monthly entitlement | PHH monthly entitlement |
|---|---|---|
| 1 member | 35 kg | 5 kg |
| 2 members | 35 kg | 10 kg |
| 3 members | 35 kg | 15 kg |
| 4 members | 35 kg | 20 kg |
| 5 members | 35 kg | 25 kg |
| 6 members | 35 kg | 30 kg |
| 7 members | 35 kg | 35 kg |
Under AAY, the household receives a fixed 35 kg per month. Under PHH, the monthly entitlement is determined by multiplying the number of eligible members by 5 kg.
For instance, a five-member PHH household is entitled to 25 kg of food grains every month, whereas an eligible five-member AAY household receives 35 kg.
Which Ration Card Category Applies to Your Family?
AAY and PHH are intended for different groups of eligible households, and the applicable category depends on the relevant identification and eligibility criteria.
AAY provides a fixed household entitlement for the poorest eligible families, while PHH provides food grains based on the number of eligible individuals. Households should check their existing ration card category and confirm their entitlement with the relevant state food and civil supplies department.
