Aadhaar-PAN Update: If you have recently moved to a new address, keeping your Aadhaar and PAN records updated can help avoid problems with identity verification, banking and other financial services. Aadhaar holders can submit an online address-update request through the myAadhaar portal, provided their mobile number is registered with Aadhaar.

PAN holders can also update their address through the authorised PAN service providers. UTIITSL currently provides an Aadhaar-based e-KYC facility for PAN address updates, while PAN-related services are also handled through Protean.

How to Update Your Address on Aadhaar Online

UIDAI allows Aadhaar holders to submit an address update request online through the myAadhaar portal. A registered mobile number is required because the user has to authenticate the request through OTP.

To update the address, log in to the myAadhaar portal using your Aadhaar number and OTP. Select the address-update service, enter your new address and upload an acceptable Proof of Address document. Check the information carefully before submitting the request.

After submission, a Service Request Number (SRN) is generated, which can be used to track the status of the request. UIDAI also states that an online address-update request can be rejected if the submitted proof is invalid or if the address entered does not match the document.

UIDAI’s current service information lists a ₹75 charge for an address update.

How to Change the Address on Your PAN Card

PAN holders can use the authorised PAN service providers for address correction. UTIITSL currently offers a specific “Address update in PAN using eKYC” facility.

Under the Aadhaar-based e-KYC process, the applicant’s Aadhaar details are used for authentication. The process involves entering the required PAN and Aadhaar information and completing the authentication through the available OTP-based verification.

It is important to remember that changing the address on Aadhaar does not, by itself, mean that the PAN address has also been changed. If the PAN record needs to be updated, the PAN address-update service should be used separately. UTIITSL provides this facility specifically for PAN address updates through Aadhaar-based e-KYC.

Documents Required for Aadhaar Address Update

A valid Proof of Address (PoA) document is required when changing the address on Aadhaar. UIDAI accepts several types of documents, subject to its current document rules.

Common examples include a passport, voter identity card, ration card, electricity, water or gas bill, bank or post-office passbook, and certain valid rent or lease agreements. The document should meet UIDAI’s requirements, and the address entered in the request should correspond with the submitted proof.

The exact list of acceptable documents can change, so applicants should check UIDAI’s latest supporting-document list before submitting an update request.

Why Keeping Aadhaar and PAN Details Updated Matters

An updated address can make it easier to maintain consistent records across identity, banking and tax-related services. Aadhaar is also used for various digital identity and authentication services, while PAN is an important identifier for income-tax and financial transactions.

Aadhaar-PAN linkage is also important for eligible taxpayers. The Income Tax Department states that PAN holders who are required to link Aadhaar and fail to do so can face consequences if the PAN becomes inoperative, including issues with tax refunds.

Therefore, after moving to a new address, it is useful to check both Aadhaar and PAN records separately and update whichever record still contains the old information.
