Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh government has announced financial relief for economically weaker families ahead of the festive season. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has announced free LPG cylinder refills for beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) on Diwali and Holi.
Under the scheme, more than 1.89 crore eligible families in Uttar Pradesh will receive two free LPG cylinder refills every year, one during Diwali and another during Holi. The announcement was made on Tuesday, November 3, in Lucknow during an event organised for the distribution of LPG refill subsidies.
The state government has allocated ₹1,500 crore for the initiative. The subsidy amount is transferred directly to the bank accounts of eligible beneficiaries to reduce their household expenses during the festive season.
UP Free Gas Cylinder Scheme: How Much Subsidy Will Beneficiaries Receive?
The Yogi Adityanath government has explained how the free LPG cylinder benefit will work. According to the announced price calculation, the cost of a domestic LPG cylinder is ₹983.45.
The central government provides a subsidy of ₹335, leaving beneficiaries with an amount of ₹648.55 to pay.
Under the Uttar Pradesh government’s scheme, the state will cover this remaining amount during Diwali and Holi. As a result, eligible Ujjwala beneficiaries can receive LPG refills without paying the remaining cylinder cost on these two occasions.
The government has set aside ₹1,500 crore for the programme, which aims to provide financial relief to millions of families.
Who Is Eligible for Two Free LPG Cylinders?
The benefit is intended for eligible households registered under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana.
More than 1.89 crore families covered under PMUY in Uttar Pradesh are expected to receive the benefit twice a year.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Ujjwala Yojana on May 1, 2016, from Ballia in Uttar Pradesh. The scheme was introduced to help eligible families access LPG connections and move away from traditional cooking fuels.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also highlighted how people previously had to pay between ₹25,000 and ₹50,000 in the black market to obtain a gas connection.
How to Get the Free LPG Cylinder Benefit
Eligible Ujjwala beneficiaries need to follow the prescribed booking and payment procedure to receive the subsidy.
First, book an LPG refill through your registered gas agency. Pay the applicable amount when the cylinder is delivered. After the payment, the eligible subsidy amount is transferred directly to the beneficiary’s bank account.
To receive the payment without unnecessary delays, beneficiaries should ensure that their bank account is linked to Aadhaar and enabled for Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT).
It is also important to complete the required Aadhaar-based e-KYC verification.
LPG e-KYC Mandatory: Check These Important Requirements
Completing e-KYC is an important requirement for beneficiaries who want to receive the LPG subsidy.
According to the announced requirements, biometric Aadhaar verification has been mandatory since October 1. Beneficiaries who have not completed the process should visit their registered gas agency and complete verification using fingerprint authentication.
The subsidy may be delayed if the required verification is incomplete.
Beneficiaries can also visit the official PMUY website at https://pmuy.gov.in/ to check scheme-related information and their connection details.
The Uttar Pradesh government’s free LPG refill initiative is designed to reduce the financial burden on eligible families during Diwali and Holi. Beneficiaries should ensure that their e-KYC, Aadhaar linking and DBT details are updated to receive the applicable benefits.
