Indian Railways is set to offer passengers some relief in travel expenses from January 1. Under the latest decision, 17 trains will lose their superfast classification and will be placed in the ordinary train category. As a result, passengers travelling on these services will no longer have to pay the additional superfast surcharge while booking tickets.
The removal of this extra charge will help passengers save between ₹30 and ₹75, depending on their travel class. The change is expected to reduce the overall ticket cost for people travelling on the affected routes.
The railway administration is also changing the numbers of the affected trains. Passengers should therefore check the revised train numbers before making their reservations.
How Much Will Passengers Save After the Superfast Charge Is Removed?
Indian Railways currently collects an additional superfast surcharge from passengers travelling on trains classified as superfast. This amount is charged separately from the basic ticket fare.

After the classification changes, passengers travelling on the affected trains will no longer need to pay this additional amount.
The existing superfast surcharge varies according to the travel class:
| Travel Class | Superfast Surcharge |
|---|---|
| Sleeper Class | ₹30 |
| AC Chair Car | ₹45 |
| AC 3 Tier | ₹45 |
| AC 3 Tier Economy | ₹45 |
| AC 2 Tier | ₹45 |
| First AC | ₹75 |
| Executive Class | ₹75 |
With the removal of the superfast classification, passengers will save the applicable surcharge when booking tickets on these trains.
