The Jio Platforms IPO attracted strong investor interest on its opening day, with bids reportedly worth more than ₹90,000 crore on October 21. The public issue marks the first IPO of a consumer-facing business from the Reliance group.
By Wednesday, the issue had been subscribed 3.04 times overall. Qualified Institutional Buyers (QIBs) led the demand, subscribing to their reserved portion 9.04 times. The non-institutional investor (NII) category was subscribed 1.61 times, while the retail portion received bids for 0.73 times the shares reserved for it.
Institutional Investors Lead the Jio IPO Subscription
Institutional demand was strong during the first hour of bidding on Wednesday. The QIB portion was subscribed 2.86 times within the opening hour, indicating significant interest from large investors.
Retail participation was comparatively slower during the same period, with bids reaching just 13% of the shares reserved for individual investors.
QIBs include banks, mutual funds, insurance companies and foreign portfolio investors (FPIs). These investors generally have greater financial resources and dedicated teams to evaluate public issues before investing.
The difference in subscription levels highlights the stronger early response from institutional investors compared with retail applicants.
Jio Platforms IPO GMP: Potential Listing Price and Gains
According to Investorgain, the grey market premium (GMP) for the Jio Platforms IPO stood at ₹246 late on October 21.
Based on the upper price band of ₹1,119 per share, the indicative listing price works out to approximately ₹1,365. This implies a potential listing gain of around 21.98% over the upper issue price.
However, the grey market premium is an unofficial indicator and can change significantly before listing. It does not guarantee the actual listing price or any profit for investors.
Jio IPO Risks Investors Should Know
Despite the strong subscription response, investors should examine the risks disclosed in the company’s Red Herring Prospectus (RHP) before making an investment decision.
Technology and competition risks: Rapid technological developments require continued investment in network upgrades. Competition from satellite broadband services could also put pressure on JioFiber, JioAirFiber and enterprise connectivity businesses.
Regulatory risks: Jio’s telecom operations are governed by Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) regulations, along with applicable licence conditions. Changes in these requirements could increase operating costs.
Outstanding legal proceedings: The RHP discloses tax proceedings involving ₹7.5 crore against the company, ₹10,836.3 crore against its subsidiaries and ₹44,187 crore against the promoter. Unfavourable outcomes in these proceedings could result in financial liabilities.
Dependence on Reliance Jio Infocomm: Reliance Jio Infocomm contributed 87.74% of Jio Platforms’ consolidated revenue in FY26. Any operational disruption affecting RJIL could therefore have a significant impact on the company’s financial performance.
Investors should review the full prospectus, understand the potential risks and consider their own financial circumstances before applying.
