Hybrid cars are attracting growing interest among Indian buyers looking for better fuel efficiency amid concerns about petrol prices and vehicle running costs. Automakers are responding by developing new models that combine petrol engines with electric motors.

Two upcoming SUVs expected to enter the Indian market in 2027 are the Maruti Suzuki Fronx facelift with hybrid technology and Renault’s new Bridger SUV. Both models are expected to focus on fuel efficiency, practicality and affordability, although their final specifications and prices have not yet been officially announced.

Maruti Suzuki Fronx Hybrid: Mileage Could Exceed 35 kmpl

Maruti Suzuki is reportedly developing a hybrid system for the Fronx based on its 1.2-litre, three-cylinder Z-series petrol engine. The engine is expected to work primarily as a range extender, generating power to charge the battery, while an electric motor will help drive the vehicle.

The combination could deliver fuel efficiency of more than 35 kmpl, according to reports. However, the final mileage figure has not been confirmed by the company.

Maruti Suzuki is also aiming to keep the technology more affordable than Toyota’s Atkinson-cycle strong-hybrid system. This could help make hybrid technology accessible to a wider group of buyers.

The Fronx facelift is expected to retain much of the existing model’s design and styling. Changes could include hybrid-specific badges and other minor details inside and outside the cabin. Maruti Suzuki has yet to announce the official launch date, pricing or complete feature list.

Renault Bridger Hybrid SUV: Rugged Styling and Practical Cabin

Renault is preparing a new sub-four-metre SUV for India based on its Bridger concept, with a launch expected by 2027. The vehicle is planned for the company’s locally developed RGMP platform, which can accommodate petrol, hybrid and electric powertrains.

The French automaker is also developing a multi-mode hybrid system aimed at growing markets such as India. The upcoming Bridger is expected to use a 1.2-litre petrol engine paired with an electric motor, although the final powertrain specifications remain unconfirmed.

The SUV is expected to feature a boxy exterior, a rugged appearance and high ground clearance, following the design direction of the concept model. Some styling elements inspired by the Renault Duster could also be incorporated.

Renault Targets Rear-Seat Comfort and Boot Space

Cabin practicality is expected to be a major focus of the Renault Bridger. The company has indicated that the SUV will offer 200 mm of rear-seat knee room and a 400-litre boot.

These figures suggest that Renault wants to prioritise passenger comfort and luggage capacity alongside the vehicle’s compact exterior dimensions. If delivered in the production model, the combination could help the Bridger appeal to families looking for a practical small SUV.

The final interior layout, equipment list and other specifications are yet to be confirmed.

Fronx Hybrid vs Renault Bridger: What Buyers Can Expect

Both upcoming SUVs are expected to compete for buyers interested in improved fuel efficiency without moving entirely to an electric vehicle. Hybrid systems combine a petrol engine with an electric motor, potentially reducing fuel consumption compared with conventional petrol-only vehicles.

The Maruti Suzuki Fronx hybrid appears focused on achieving high mileage while retaining the familiar design of the existing model. Renault, meanwhile, is highlighting the Bridger’s rugged styling, cabin space and practicality.

However, buyers will need to wait for official announcements before comparing the vehicles on price, performance, features and real-world fuel economy. Their final specifications and positioning will be important in determining how competitive they are in India’s growing hybrid vehicle market.
