Bank customers across India should plan their branch visits carefully this week as several states observe major festivals. According to the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) holiday calendar, banks in most parts of the country will remain closed on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, on the occasion of Dussehra, also known as Vijayadashami.
On Monday, October 19, several banks in Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Bihar and Jharkhand were also closed to mark Mahanavami. These consecutive holidays have created an extended break of three to four days for customers in some regions.
However, customers can continue to use digital banking facilities, including internet banking, mobile banking, UPI and ATMs, during the holidays.
Bank Holiday Schedule for October 2026
The following dates are listed as bank holidays during the week:
- Tuesday, October 20: Banks will remain closed in most parts of India for Dussehra/Vijayadashami, with some northeastern states excluded.
- Wednesday, October 21: Banks in northeastern states, including Assam and Tripura, will observe holidays for Durga Puja/Vijayadashami.
- Saturday, October 24: Banks across India will remain closed for the fourth Saturday of the month.
- Sunday, October 25: Bank branches will be closed nationwide for the regular weekly holiday.
Bank holidays may vary by state and region, so customers should check the applicable RBI holiday calendar before visiting their local branch.
Which Banking Services Will Be Available?
Although bank branches may be closed, most routine financial transactions can still be completed through digital channels. Customers can use UPI apps such as Google Pay, PhonePe and Paytm, along with mobile banking and internet banking, to transfer money and manage their accounts.
ATMs and cash deposit machines can also be used for cash withdrawals and eligible deposits, subject to service availability at individual locations.
How to Manage Banking Work During the Holidays
Customers who need branch-based services, such as cheque clearance or demand draft processing, should complete their work in advance or plan to visit the branch after the holiday period.
For urgent money transfers, the Immediate Payment Service (IMPS) allows customers to transfer funds instantly between bank accounts, including on bank holidays, subject to the applicable bank and transaction limits.
Planning ahead and using available digital banking services can help customers avoid unnecessary delays during the festive holiday period.
