Fourteen years after Student Of The Year arrived in theatres, filmmaker Karan Johar is bringing the popular franchise back with a completely different approach. Titled Student Of The Year – After Dark, the upcoming JioHotstar Special features Shanaya Kapoor in the lead role and is set to premiere on 13 November.
Unlike the earlier films, which focused on campus romance, rivalry and glamour, the new series promises a darker and more intense take on student life.
Karan Johar Unveils a Darker Chapter
Karan Johar recently shared an 18-second teaser on Instagram, introducing the next chapter of the franchise. Describing the project as a new journey, he asked viewers to prepare for what he called “gritty, gory, unabashed and absolute madness.”
The teaser suggests a significant shift in tone, moving away from the colourful campus setting and glamorous storytelling associated with the previous instalments.
How After Dark Differs From the Original
Released in 2012, the first Student Of The Year revolved around school rivalries, romantic relationships and the pursuit of a coveted trophy. The franchise later introduced new actors through its subsequent films.
Student Of The Year – After Dark is expected to take a more intense and edgy direction. Reports have described the series as a blend of class-based themes and the bold storytelling associated with Euphoria, setting it apart from the earlier films.
Shanaya Kapoor Leads the Cast
Shanaya Kapoor will headline the upcoming series, marking her first major OTT outing. She was recently seen in Tu Yaa Main and is reportedly set to portray a double role in Student Of The Year – After Dark.
The franchise has previously introduced several actors who went on to establish themselves in the entertainment industry, including Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan, Sidharth Malhotra, Ananya Panday and Tara Sutaria.
Director, Production and Streaming Details
Karan Johar has confirmed that Reema Maya is directing the series. He has also explained that he wanted the project to reflect her creative voice rather than his own.
The series is being produced by Dharmatic Entertainment, the digital production arm of Dharma Productions.
Student Of The Year – After Dark will premiere exclusively on JioHotstar on 13 November. The series will consist of six episodes.
With its darker tone, a different creative direction and Shanaya Kapoor at the centre of the story, the upcoming series marks a new chapter for the franchise. Viewers will get to see how this fresh approach unfolds when it begins streaming in November.
