Travelling to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra by train is set to become more convenient for pilgrims, with Indian Railways extending the route of the Sabarmati BG–Jammu Tawi Express to Katra. The change will allow passengers to reach their destination directly instead of getting off at Jammu Tawi and arranging another train for the onward journey.
The extended service is expected to benefit devotees travelling from Rajasthan and other regions to visit Mata Vaishno Devi, particularly families travelling with children and elderly passengers.
When Will the Direct Train Service Start?
According to Anurag Tripathi, Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) of the North Western Railway’s Jodhpur division, train number 19223, the Sabarmati BG–Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra Express, is scheduled to begin operating on the extended route from October 18, 2026.
With this change, passengers will be able to travel directly to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra on the same train. Previously, travellers heading to Katra had to get off at Jammu Tawi and make separate arrangements to reach their final destination.
The route extension is intended to make rail travel more convenient for pilgrims visiting the popular religious destination.
Return Train Service to Begin on October 20
Indian Railways has also announced an extension for the return journey. Train number 19224, the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra–Sabarmati BG Express, is scheduled to begin its extended service from Katra on October 20, 2026.
The return service will provide passengers with a direct rail connection towards Sabarmati BG, reducing the need to change trains at Jammu Tawi.
Travellers planning their pilgrimage can consider these dates while arranging their onward and return journeys. Passengers should check the latest railway timetable for the applicable departure times and station details.
How the Route Extension Will Help Pilgrims
The direct train connection is expected to make the journey easier for devotees travelling to Vaishno Devi with their families. Earlier, passengers had to manage an additional journey between Jammu Tawi and Katra after arriving by train.
Avoiding this extra transfer can be particularly helpful for elderly travellers, children and families carrying luggage. The extended route will allow passengers to reach Katra more directly and simplify travel arrangements for the pilgrimage.
