The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has extended the deadline for free Mandatory Biometric Updates (MBU) for children until September 30, 2027. Parents can use this extended period to ensure their children’s Aadhaar records are updated as required.

Aadhaar serves as an important identity document for children and is used for various purposes. UIDAI has also highlighted its role in helping identify missing children and reunite them with their families. Maintaining accurate identity records can support these efforts during difficult situations.

Free Aadhaar Biometric Update Deadline Extended

Under the revised guidelines, children aged 5 to 17 can complete their Mandatory Biometric Update free of charge until September 30, 2027. The exemption was previously scheduled to remain in effect until September 30, 2026.

Earlier, free biometric updates were available only to children in the 5–7 and 15–17 age groups. The extended provision now covers all children aged 5 to 17 during the specified period.

Parents are advised to check their children’s Aadhaar update requirements and complete the mandatory process within the extended deadline.

How Aadhaar Helps Identify Missing Children

UIDAI has shared a video on X, formerly known as Twitter, highlighting the importance of biometric updates for children. In the video, Prime Minister Narendra Modi explains why keeping children’s Aadhaar biometric records updated is important.

According to the information shared, Aadhaar has helped reunite more than 644 missing children and individuals with their families. The update highlights the importance of Aadhaar enrolment and completing mandatory biometric updates when children reach the ages of 5 and 15.

Parents should pay particular attention to these age milestones to help maintain accurate biometric information in their children’s Aadhaar records.

Why Is a Biometric Update Necessary for Children?

When Aadhaar is first issued to a young child, the biometric information collected is limited. As children grow, their biometric characteristics develop, making subsequent updates necessary.

At the age of 5, children must undergo a biometric update that includes a new photograph, fingerprints of all fingers and iris scans of both eyes. The collected information is then added to the child’s existing Aadhaar record.

Another mandatory biometric update is required when the child reaches the age of 15. These updates help ensure that the biometric details associated with Aadhaar reflect the individual as they grow.

Does the Aadhaar Number Change After a Biometric Update?

No. A child’s existing 12-digit Aadhaar number remains unchanged after a Mandatory Biometric Update.

UIDAI also carries out a de-duplication process during the update at age 5. Although the procedure involves collecting biometric information in a manner similar to a fresh enrolment, the child retains their original Aadhaar number.

Parents should therefore ensure that the mandatory updates are completed at the required ages and take advantage of the extended free-service period ending September 30, 2027.
