New Delhi: New Zealand have announced an expanded 21-member squad for their upcoming five-match ODI series against India, with Rachin Ravindra and Mark Chapman returning to the one-day team after being ruled out of the T20I series because of injuries.
The ODI series is scheduled to begin on November 4. The tour will also feature a five-match T20I series before the two teams meet for two Test matches.
Mitchell Santner will captain New Zealand in the ODI leg, with head coach Rob Walter selecting a squad that will change as the series progresses. The arrangement allows several players to feature in the opening matches before joining preparations for the Test series.
Rachin Ravindra and Mark Chapman Return to the Squad
Ravindra and Chapman have both been included in the ODI squad despite missing the T20I series. Ravindra suffered a shoulder dislocation, while Chapman has been sidelined by a hamstring injury.
Their return strengthens New Zealand’s options for the five-match contest against India. Both players are expected to feature in the ODI series, subject to their availability and fitness.
The squad has been divided into three groups. Six players have been selected for all five matches, while eight others will take part in the first three ODIs before leaving to prepare for the Test series. Seven players have been named for the final two matches.
Finn Allen, Tim Seifert and Lockie Ferguson Included
New Zealand have also selected Finn Allen, Tim Seifert and Lockie Ferguson for the final two ODIs. The trio have not represented the country in the 50-over format for the past 18 months, having continued to prioritise franchise T20 competitions around the world.
Their inclusion gives them an opportunity to return to New Zealand’s ODI setup and strengthen their cases for a place in the squad for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Walter welcomed the depth available to the team and said selecting 21 players would help New Zealand manage the demands of the multi-format tour.
“We are incredibly lucky to have the depth that we do to have 21 players involved in the series. It is also great to bring guys like Lockie, Finn and Tim back into the one-day unit,” Walter said.
He also highlighted the opportunity for Allen and Seifert to demonstrate their abilities in the 50-over format.
“For Finn and Tim in particular, we have seen what they can do in the T20 arena and it is now a great opportunity for them to push their case in the longer format,” he added.
