Upcoming Hybrid SUVs in India: Hybrid technology is expected to become increasingly important in India’s SUV market as buyers look for better fuel efficiency without making a complete shift to electric vehicles. Several automakers, including Maruti Suzuki, Kia, Renault, Honda and Toyota, are reportedly exploring hybrid technology for their upcoming compact SUVs.
Here are five hybrid SUVs that could make their way to the Indian market.
Maruti Suzuki Fronx Hybrid
Maruti Suzuki is reportedly considering a hybrid version of the Fronx. The SUV could use the company’s 1.2-litre, three-cylinder Z-Series petrol engine combined with an electric motor and a compact battery pack.
Reports suggest that the Fronx Hybrid could deliver mileage of more than 35 kmpl, although Maruti Suzuki has not officially confirmed this figure. The company has also not announced the launch date or final specifications of the hybrid model.

Next-Generation Kia Sonet Hybrid
Kia is also expected to expand its hybrid portfolio in India. The next-generation Kia Sonet is expected to arrive around 2027, with a hybrid version potentially following later.
At present, details about the proposed hybrid powertrain, battery capacity and electric motor have not been disclosed. If introduced, the hybrid Sonet could offer buyers another powertrain choice alongside the existing petrol and diesel options.
More information is expected to emerge closer to the launch of the next-generation Sonet.
Renault Bridger Hybrid
Renault is developing a new sub-4-metre SUV, reportedly expected to be called the Bridger. The upcoming model will sit below the Duster in Renault’s SUV range, with production expected to begin in 2027.
The SUV is planned around Renault’s multi-energy platform, which can accommodate different powertrain technologies. This has led to expectations that a hybrid version could also be offered.
However, Renault has not yet confirmed whether the India-spec Bridger will receive a hybrid powertrain. If introduced, such a version could give Renault a new entry into the hybrid compact SUV segment.

Honda’s Upcoming Compact SUV
Honda is also working on a new compact SUV for the Indian market, which is expected to arrive around 2028. The model is likely to fall into the sub-4-metre SUV category and could further expand Honda’s presence in India’s SUV market.
There are expectations that the new SUV could receive hybrid technology, although Honda has not officially confirmed the powertrain. Details about its design, features and engine options are currently limited.
Toyota Urban Cruiser Taisor Hybrid
Toyota could also introduce a hybrid version of the Urban Cruiser Taisor. The Taisor shares its platform and several components with the Maruti Suzuki Fronx, which has led to expectations that a potential hybrid Taisor could use a system based on Maruti’s Z-Series engine.
Toyota has not yet confirmed the hybrid Taisor, including its launch timeline or powertrain specifications. If introduced, the model could bring Toyota’s hybrid technology to a more affordable compact SUV segment in India.
