Petrol and diesel prices remained unchanged across major Indian cities on October 6, even as international crude oil prices hovered close to the $100-per-barrel level amid continuing tensions in West Asia.
State-owned oil marketing companies have maintained existing retail fuel rates. However, Nayara Energy has increased petrol prices by ₹5 per litre and diesel prices by ₹3 per litre at its outlets.
The stability in retail prices comes despite growing pressure on oil marketing companies from higher international fuel costs. According to ICRA, state-run OMCs are currently facing daily losses of around ₹530 crore because of the gap between international fuel prices and domestic retail rates.
Petrol and Diesel Prices in Major Cities
Fuel prices continue to vary considerably across Indian cities because of differences in taxes and other local costs.
| City | Petrol (₹/Litre) | Diesel (₹/Litre) |
|---|---|---|
| Mumbai | ₹111.21 | ₹97.83 |
| Delhi | ₹102.12 | ₹95.20 |
| Kolkata | ₹113.51 | ₹99.82 |
| Chennai | ₹107.76 | ₹99.55 |
| Bengaluru | ₹111.68 | ₹99.56 |
| Hyderabad | ₹116.15 | ₹104.23 |
In Mumbai, petrol is priced at ₹111.21 per litre, while diesel costs ₹97.83 per litre. In Delhi, petrol is available at ₹102.12 per litre and diesel at ₹95.20 per litre.
High Crude Prices Put Pressure on OMCs
International oil prices have remained elevated as tensions in West Asia continue to create uncertainty around global supplies. Sustained high crude prices could increase India’s oil import bill and put additional pressure on domestic fuel prices in the coming weeks.
Despite Brent crude moving above $100 per barrel, petrol and diesel rates have remained relatively stable over the past week. The rupee-dollar exchange rate is another important factor for India because the country depends heavily on imported crude oil.
A weaker rupee against the US dollar increases the cost of crude imports and can eventually put upward pressure on retail fuel prices.
For consumers, the current stability means there has been no major immediate increase at fuel stations in most cities. However, petrol and diesel prices remain significantly influenced by global crude prices, currency movements and local taxation.
Why Petrol and Diesel Prices Differ Across Cities
Fuel rates are not identical across India because the final retail price depends on several factors. These include state taxes, transportation expenses and dealer commissions.
Although the refinery-level base price of petrol and diesel is broadly similar, taxes imposed by the central and state governments account for a significant share of the price paid by consumers.
Transportation costs and local demand-supply conditions can also affect the final price. As a result, petrol and diesel can cost noticeably more or less depending on the city and state.
