Vande Bharat Sleeper: Travelling by train between Bengaluru and Mumbai could become significantly faster with the proposed launch of the Vande Bharat Sleeper service. The new overnight train is expected to reduce the journey from the current 22–24 hours to around 16 hours and 5 minutes.
The return journey from Mumbai to Bengaluru is expected to take approximately 15 hours and 45 minutes. If introduced as proposed, the service could save passengers nearly 6 to 8 hours compared with the existing travel time.
Bengaluru-Mumbai Vande Bharat Sleeper Schedule
The Bengaluru-Mumbai route covers around 1,137 kilometres and is equipped with double tracks and full electrification. A large portion of the route supports speeds of up to 130 kmph, making it suitable for a faster overnight train service.
As per the proposed timetable, the train would depart from Sir M. Visvesvaraya Terminal (SMVT) Bengaluru at 7:50 pm and reach Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT), Mumbai, at 11:55 am the following morning.
For the return journey, the proposed departure from Mumbai is 8:10 pm, with arrival in Bengaluru at 11:55 am the next day.
The service would reportedly become the first Vande Bharat Sleeper train to operate in South India. However, the Railway Ministry has not yet made a final announcement regarding the launch date or confirmed timetable.
Proposed Stops and Train Numbers
According to the proposed plan, the Bengaluru-Mumbai Vande Bharat Sleeper could stop at several stations along the route. These include Anantapur, Raichur, Kalaburagi, Solapur and Pune.
The tentative train numbers are 27651 and 27652. However, both the final train number and stoppages are yet to be officially confirmed.
The train is currently proposed to originate from SMVT Bengaluru. There have also been requests for the service to start from KSR Bengaluru, the city’s main railway station, as it could be more convenient for passengers.
The launch of the Bengaluru-Mumbai Vande Bharat Sleeper was first announced in September 2025. The final decision on its originating station is expected along with the official announcement of the service.
Two 16-Coach Trainsets Ready
Two 16-coach Vande Bharat Sleeper trainsets are planned for the service. The trainsets have been manufactured by Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) under the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) programme.
According to the information in the proposed plan, one trainset is currently at Bengaluru Cantonment, while the other is stationed at Varadapura near Bangarapet. The Railway Board is expected to issue a formal notification regarding their handover to South Western Railway.
Each train will have 16 coaches, comprising 11 3AC coaches, four 2AC coaches and one 1AC coach.
The estimated one-way 3AC fare is around ₹3,000. The proposed fare is expected to include meals such as breakfast and lunch, in line with food services offered on long-distance Vande Bharat trains.
With a shorter journey time and a fare expected to be lower than the cost of flying, the proposed service could offer passengers another overnight travel option between Bengaluru and Mumbai.
