Free Bus Travel for Women: Women in Tamil Nadu can now travel free of cost on a much wider range of government buses under the expanded Vettri Payanam scheme. The initiative was launched on October 2, 2026, with the state government extending the existing free-travel facility to additional categories of bus services.

The scheme is expected to benefit around 84.32 lakh women every day. Transgender passengers are also covered under the expanded facility. The government has brought thousands of additional buses under the programme to make travel easier for education, employment, healthcare and other essential needs.

Which Buses Are Covered Under the Scheme?

The expanded Vettri Payanam scheme now covers Express, Limited Stop Service (LSS), Deluxe, Mofussil Ordinary and Ghat Ordinary buses operating on routes exceeding 40 km.

According to the government, 12,695 buses have been included in the expanded programme, with around 1,68,500 single trips being operated under the scheme. The facility covers buses run by the state’s seven transport corporations.

The expansion means women are no longer restricted to the ordinary bus services that were covered under the earlier arrangement. The government has widened the coverage to include several services that connect cities, towns and longer-distance routes.

However, State Express Transport Corporation (SETC) buses are not included in the scheme.

No Income Limit or Daily Trip Restriction

Women do not have to meet an income criterion to use the free-travel facility. There is also no limit on the number of free journeys a beneficiary can make in a day, according to the government.

The scheme is intended to help women who regularly travel to workplaces, colleges, hospitals and other places for essential services. Female students travelling to colleges located away from their homes are among those expected to benefit from the expanded coverage.

The government has also integrated the eligible buses with Electronic Ticketing Machines (ETMs) so that free journeys can be recorded through the ticketing system.

84.32 Lakh Women Expected to Benefit Daily

The expanded programme covers a substantial portion of the scheduled bus operations in Tamil Nadu. Government figures indicate that about 12,695 buses are being brought under the scheme, with the facility expected to reach approximately 84.32 lakh women every day.

The expansion is aimed at reducing the transportation barrier faced by women travelling for work, education, medical care and other necessary activities.

The scheme was formally launched at Chennai’s Koyambedu Bus Terminus on October 2, with Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay distributing free tickets to women passengers.

Where Has the Scheme Been Temporarily Withheld?

The free-travel expansion is not being implemented immediately in Chengalpattu and Tiruppur districts because the Model Code of Conduct is in force there in connection with the by-elections for the Madurantakam and Dharapuram constituencies.

The government has stated that the scheme will be implemented in these districts after the election-related restrictions are lifted.

The name Vettri Payanam translates roughly to “Victorious Journey.” The expanded programme builds on Tamil Nadu’s existing free bus travel facility for women by bringing additional government bus categories and longer routes under the scheme.
