SBI offers several savings and government-backed investment options beyond traditional fixed deposits (FDs). For people looking for relatively secure investments without direct exposure to stock market fluctuations, schemes such as SCSS, Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana and PPF provide different benefits based on age, financial goals and eligibility.

Here is a look at the interest rates, investment limits and key features of these three SBI-linked government schemes.

1. Senior Citizen Savings Scheme (SBI SCSS)

The Senior Citizen Savings Scheme (SCSS) is designed for individuals aged 60 years and above. It can be considered as an alternative to a regular fixed deposit for eligible senior citizens.

Under the scheme, the interest rate is 8.20% per year. The interest is paid quarterly and can be credited directly to the investor’s SBI savings account, providing a regular income stream.

Eligible investors can deposit up to ₹30 lakh in the scheme. Investments also qualify for tax benefits under Section 80C, subject to applicable rules.

2. Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana (SBI SSY)

The Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana is intended to help parents or guardians build savings for the future of a girl child below 10 years of age.

The scheme currently offers an annual interest rate of 8.20%, with interest compounded annually. It is designed as a long-term savings option for a daughter’s future financial needs.

Investors can deposit a minimum of ₹250 and a maximum of ₹1.5 lakh in a financial year. Deposits, interest earned and eligible maturity proceeds are covered by the applicable tax exemption provisions.

3. Public Provident Fund (SBI PPF)

The Public Provident Fund (PPF) is a long-term savings scheme suitable for goals such as wealth creation and retirement planning. It offers a government-backed savings structure with a long investment horizon.

The current PPF interest rate is 7.10% per year, with interest compounded annually. PPF also falls under the EEE (Exempt-Exempt-Exempt) tax structure, subject to prevailing tax rules, meaning eligible contributions, interest and maturity proceeds receive tax benefits.

The scheme has a 15-year lock-in period. After this period, the account can be extended in blocks of five years. The minimum annual contribution is ₹500.

How to Open These SBI Schemes

Eligible customers can open these accounts through online as well as offline channels, depending on the scheme and SBI’s available services.

For online applications, SBI customers can use Internet Banking or the YONO SBI app to access eligible government schemes through the relevant E-Services/Govt Schemes section.

For offline applications, customers can visit their nearest SBI branch with documents such as Aadhaar card, PAN card, photograph and the required minimum deposit. The bank will process the account opening after completing the necessary formalities.
